Center console/panel removal

Hi all
Done a search on changing the centre panel but still had some unanswered questions! .
Everyone tells me its a b
h of a job. I think im going to do the mod Chris did and cut away some of the panel and then make a new one to make it easier.
Do i have to completely remove the heater controls or can i just unbolt them from the panel and leave in situ?
Im also going to fit the oil pressure/temp gauge. any tips or tricks?

Ye just cut out some of the dash at the side and make an access panel, once its done its done, I can remove my centre console with ease and in minutes now, It should have been designed with an access panel from factory IMO.

Done this today.. managed to do it all with my head in the drivers footwell. Not something i want to do again!
I do have an issue though with the heat control though. It was tight going between temp and so planned on looking at it but as i moved the knob the cable went completely slack and it was easy to turn between hot and cold. Think its broken somehow, any ideas??

I don't know if this will help - here is a pic of the valve at the other end of the temperature control cable. If you can get in a position to see it, you can have a friend work the knob while you watch what the cable does at the valve.

Yup, that's where it will have come undone, there is a little plastic clip which breaks off quite easilyJeff

You can do less radical surgery than Chris which makes life a lot easier
I tried to cut the dash back like this, still a complete nightmare of a job to do though, as you have to get your arms past that triangular centre strut/tie that joins the dash cross bar to the tunnel, i gave up in the end and cut the side access which in front of the chassis and makes it so much easier.You can do less radical surgery than Chris which makes life a lot easier

The chrome bezel and plastic blue high beam cover pulls off, behind is the bulb in its holder, this is glued to the console, so simply replace the bulb from the front..This is a trade secret so don't tell anybody else, and if you do then tell them not to tell anybody..

Sorry about that, I assumed as the lights are glued to the facia and bulb holder comes out from the back there was no front access. Can't look again as I no longer have the facia.the chrome bezel is a tight fit but its only pressed in, it will come off with a bit of a wiggle, after you change the bulb the bezel just presses back in.
I want to add though, you can get your fingers inside, you will need some long nose pliars with a bit foam around the bulb also dont press in too hard or you will pop the bulb holder out and into the void behind, but the buld holder is held in pretty well and you dont need to use too much force the get the bulb in and out, just be very light handed.

Well I tried. Didn't want to mark the console so tried to slide a Stanley knife blade under the bezel, whilst using the stem of a screwdriver as a pivot. When I tried to lever it off, it just took a sliver of the blade off. Then tried my water pump pliers (wrapped in hankie) to turn the bezel. No movement, slight scratchin of bezel. I'm getting the suspicion that you're sat at home pissing yourself, knowing that there's no way you can get at the bulb from the front! I'll just nip off to the stores for another tin of elbow grease.
