All,

Advice appreciated on track-tyre. Noble is now a second car so can use some proper rubber. Understand Proxes R888 are the standard to beat. Has anyone fitted oversized tyres (i.e. 295s rear etc) to good effect? Any advice on where to source the tyres would be very helpful.

Cheers

888's easily beaten on track by A048's or Trofeos.

235/40 fronts and either 275/35 or 295/30 are good on the rear for traction...

Is there a noticeably difference in balance if you go up to 295 rear with 235 fronts?

Beg to differ Steve, dependant on the track R888's with the correct tyre pressures are better & i'm on the standard sizes, but having said that l am using Ohlins dampers.

If budget is not a factor then the michelin cup sport are by far the best, just exspensive, the 888s imo come second and will last longer, then the AO48 which are very good just a harder compound so not as sticky but will prob outlast the others.
I have tried them all, and thats what worked best on my car.
Tyre pressure is the key, so trial and error is the best way to find what suits your car.

I've had a few sets of 888 my first being really good and was happy with and there cheap compared to others. But my last set I got. Just didn't satisfy me. Went off to quick ok if I just wanted to do a few laps then after I spent most of my time going sideways and getting out of shape. And my last set as few will say at donnington they got boiling hot. But not sticky and they were almost brand new that set. A048 are about 400 more or the trofeo what's almost the same but I can't comment on them. If my two pence worth is worth anything. Something to think about tho

Kev

I'm running fully adjustable suspension too, and found the 888's to be very grippy for 6 to 8 laps at somewhere like Spa then they just gave up, but as you commented maybe my tyre pressures were way off...

Steve, l can see exactly what you mean as somewhere like Spa especially if hot the 888's would give after a few laps & in that instance the harder A048's would be better.
I'm at Silverstone on Monday with both types so will compare, interesting about the Cup sport Craig as have never tried however for short duration sprint laps l suspect they won't work aswell as the 888's.

Hi Kev, The pilot cup sports are the softest compound of all, as near to a slick as poss, it was by far the best tyre for dry grip as i have used, they heat up in less than a lap, problem is, I only got 2 track days from a new set and at nearly 1300 a set, I only bought them once.

Funny that about the consistancy of the 888s Steve, I tried them on my caterham and they were hopeless, the compound seemed harder than the ones on my noble and gave no grip, I put it down to the car being to light for them to work properly,
Maybe the consistancy iin the compound isnt as good as it should be?

For the road I find the 888's great, as they heat up very quickly and give more than ample grip as you cannot/should not use them hard enough to get them too warm.
Even at Silverstone last year both myself and Grant found they do go 'off' after even a few hard laps at the end of a session. Again this might be due to pressures etc but I find the A048's just don't suffer from heat the same way and once warm offer better grip IMO.

I can only comment on the ao48's, a great tyre but takes some work to build heat to perform, I expected more the way people raved on about them though, keen to try 888's next, I think a combination of a softer front to improve the turn in with the yokos on rear would work well. The front ao48's don't get as grippy as the rears which lets them down.

The right hand side clearly has at least .1mm before the tread depth blocks wink

Like all these threads, its a job to work out the overall best option. My new alloys are coming out of storage next week. From what i have read, for mainly road use and the few track day etc 888's seem the best bet, would that be correct??

It's such a personal thing tyres but for me it comes down to price as much as performance , the 888's are great value , Bush Tyres have just done a pair of rears for £350+vat fitted and balanced !! Pretty good value !!
Yes they do go off after 5 laps but to be honest I'm knackered after. That !!!!

I can't fault the F452s I've got on the M400, excellent progressive breakaway and stick like s**t in the hot weather.

Wet weather performance is pretty good, great lateral stability and no aquaplaning (I presume due to the two radial strips in the middle)

A bit off the beaten path, but I'm so impressed that I stuck a pair on the front of the Z4M and it's transformed the handling of that.
