HD Camera?

Hello Chaps,

I'm thinking of getting a camera to put in the car for trackdays and gather the GoPro HDs are quite popular?

There is now a GoPro HD2 which, although more expensive, seems to be worth the difference from the reviews as it has better image quality.

I don't do as many trackdays as some, and although it's probably a long shot I was wondering if the GoPro HD2 would actually be useable as a holiday camera? I know it wouldn't be as good as a normal video camera with zoom, lcd back etc., but it's easier to justify buying one if it could have a secondary use. Any thoughts/experience? (All the video on you tube seems to simply be of the mountain biking variety, compressed quality for the 'net, and not much with the later GoPro2 anyway.)

The other question is - are these easy to mount in a noble? The motorsports kit comes with a suction cup type mount, but will that be accepted at most trackdays or do you generally need to mount the camera directly to the roll cage?

GoPros are very wide angle so I bit rubbish for general use. That said they're waterproof so you can use them where most other cams would die.

If you don't secure it properly in the car most trackdays shouldn't let you drive. Not hard to bolt them to the cage though.

I use an old Go Pro, you used to be able to buy std lens or wide angle.

I would wait for the HD3 as I'm told its on its way.

I put mine on the rear and then just have a cable tie around the mount to the rear wing, they are happy with that. For the fron camera you can just stick it on the inside and they will be happy

its a neat bit of kit and very robust

can be stuck to a helmet, door or roof with the suction cup

or you can attach it to the roll cage

it can go underwater too !

Track days won't allow the camera to just be held by the suction cup. you have to still tie it off somewhere so if it does come off it doesn't go crashing into someone else. This is why I put it on the rear under the spoiler over to one side so I can use a daisy chain of cable ties to anchore it if it comes un stuck

Pound for pound, it's a great piece of kit. Simple to use (i am rubbish with gizmos) And the picture quality is plenty good enough. The bad point being is if you want to do lots of filming externally. You will get wind noise at speed. But internally, you shouldn't have any issues.

It's also great if you are a keen Boarder/Skier, mountain biker or surfer.

Try the 'Action Pro' available from the Dog Cam Sport website. I have one and it records very well IMO.

I was very tempted by the Action Pro, Steve - it looks very good and is a very good price especially given it also includes the remote and lcd back.

I went with the GoPro2 in the end though as I found the motorsports edition for only £190 new, so only £10 more with the lcd back (but no remote) - the selectable field of view in 1020p mode swung it for me as that may possibly address Phil's concern - don't know how much image quality will suffer though - they say it doesn't but I can't quite believe that.

Take some footage and post it up as I would like to see the quality of it.

I will keep my original GoPro for outside the car (As this is always shown as a small rear view overlayed on the main in car shot) and maybe get the HD for inside the car.
