Micro blistering
Discussion
Well thought as it was dry today I would go out for a drive. Take cover off which I have used for 3.5 years and the whole car is covered in micro bubbles. Not happy as going to need a complete respray.
Why does this happen? Is it osmosis in which case would this happen again if reprinted due to the water being in the fibre glass itself.

The blistering is moisture trapped in between coats of paint, using a car cover will speed up blistering as there the moisture will just sit on the paint. I would never use a car cover on a fibreglass car if its outside for this very reason. Would be better to leave it uncovered, or in a garage with an indoor cover on it if possible

I don't have a garage. Have always kept it under the cover. The reason I use it is if I don't I get a nice puddle in driver footwell which after 3.5 years a complete resealed of floor still can't work out where it's coming from.
Door Seals? Happens from time to time in a few TVR's.jdearden said:

likewise.. I still cant figure out where its coming from. Mine is limited to the area around the peddles and thats it!.. I think ill get Jetstream on the case! Not long after buying my car the drivers side floor pan was filling with water. Whilst looking under the dash at the foot pedals I got someone to pour water down the windscreen and could see water dripping down the bulkhead. There was a wire in the corner coming through the bulkhead that wasn't sealed, but that wasn't the only entry point. It actually turned out to be a seam just above the brake master cylinder (I also applied more sealant to the top of the master cylinder/bulkhead join). I haven't had a problem since - my floor pan has already been resealed.

Look chaps its British it will leak in places unexplained by science and newton laws every part of the car has the possibility to leak .Car covers outside will test the best paintwork in the world we have the added benefit of having the plastic pigs cousin for bodywork if it hasn't been cured properly at production it will be porous and soak up moisture covers are poss the worst option a leanto failing a dry garage is the best option imho.
If you phone Mark Baldwin at East Bilney Coachworks he explains stuff in depth the guy is to bodywork what Lee Noble is to chassis design he is the only guy Ive trusted with my motors in 35yrs, offical factory Lotus warranty centre , Bentley,Rolls yada yada only approved aluminium repair shop has every tee shirt know in the bodywork game ,he will leave you in no doubt what suits what dependent on how the car has been painted .
Micro blistering can happen for a number of reasons, the usual cause is normally solvent trapped in the paint, under the surface bubbles can form, in cold, damp and freezing weather you know what happens.. correct they swell up and pop up to the surface of the paint. Happens with poor/heavy application, not adhering to flash off times etc. GRP is more prone to it.

Lack of stonechips would suggest my paint was very recent when I bought the car a year ago. It's one of those little things which really p***es me off every time I open the garage.
its very unlikelly if its resprayed that they also did under the headlight covers as it would have cost more to remove them and rebond than the entire spray job as its a complicated job to remove. Gassing Station | Noble | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
