Speed camera detector

Does anyone recommend or use a detector in their Nobles? Im just thinking it might be worth while during a spirited drive ;-)

I use the road angel compact. It's very old but also has the laser detector. I mainly use it for more accurate speeds.

So I would recommend the latest road angel.

+1 used road angel for year good product,the laser wont save you though by the time its sounded its to late

Also the road pilot is very good, only downside is the subscription each year, but its very good and even shows hand held and speed traps aswell as cams, and slides out very quick if needed.

Almost any GPS receiver (£30 TomTom One off eBay for example) and a subscription to pocketgpsworld for £20 a year, the world's biggest speed camera database. Once you've adjusted the warning distances to your preferences, it'll warn you about fixed, variable & mobile trap sites, and it's updated every few weeks.

The best bit (apart from accurate data and low subscription cost) is it actually tells you what the speed limit is, so you don't have to guess.

Really, they have to take your speed over a set distance so don't you have a chance to drop the average a bit if I act quickly?

I know mine works as it kept going off at Rockingham as there was obviously some speed trap after the long bend coming into the hair pin.

Yes they go off but by the time its activated the signal from the other end has locked on and done its job ,jammers are far more effective I have used these in the past to great effect but you need to have gates or garage doors working on the same setup to not get mugged when you do jam the plodders gear ,just been a article on ph about some guy in a Rangerover on the M18.

Detectors work occasionally if you get a reflection off something else, but simple maths says if you're doing (for example) 90 in a 60 and they have to measure you for 1/3rd mile then (mile every 40 seconds) you have 12 seconds to reduce your average to 60... which means even if you could break instantaneously you'd still need to get down to 30mph for the next 12 seconds.

Ok, that's all theoretical and impossible, but you see the problem. In reality if they saw & video you doing an emergency stop from 90 to 25mph a few seconds after they pull the trigger, you're going to be in trouble.

That said, I avoided a couple of 'problems' using my old Bel detector over a 10 year period. But the gpspocketworld system is so much better.

The other thing worth mentioning, don't take either detector or GPS-type systems to France or Switzerland. Even if they're turned off, you're committing a crime, and they do know EXACTLY what to look for, if caught in France they will fine you 750-1500 Euros on the spot.

That's no problem if you have good breaks..lol

But what will help is if you were say doing 105 in ban territory then you only need to get under 100 average to prevent the ban. So still worth having.

I think you'd still need to slam the brakes on and they'd do you for dangerous driving... remember they're videoing you. In my experience, it takes 3 or 4 seconds to react, then ~5 seconds to scrub off 10 mph, unless you're the kind who'd stamp on the brakes. Let's say you're expecting a speed camera and you can get down to 90 within 8 seconds. So you'd... oh, I can't find a calculator!

Really, pocketgpsworld and update it once a month. The only time my Bel detector would beat it would be a completely new, random speed trap.

I have the tomtom live system (first twelve months included) that's supposed to update automatically all the mobile and fixed locations each time it is switched on (police have to notify where these are apparently) but I have driven passed two scamera vans and both times the system has failed to warn me. There is a facility where you can notify the type and location of these, but that's too late if you're the first to find them!!
On the jamming front, I was told (by an unreliable source ) that if you jam a system your number is logged, if it happens again, they can impound the car and check for devices that may be deemed to be illegal. Mate of mine has used a jammer on this car for years and has never had any problems, so this could all be a load of tosh. I have electric garage doors though......tell me more!!!
Removal of front plate is also good, with scratched up plate that you have retrieved from the road side, in the passenger foot well.
