wont start

Got the car delivered this morning. its been stood a while as it was being repaired. Went to start and it fired, but it ran really ropey a few seconds then cut out. Done this a few times. Now it wont fire at all. when I put the key in, the fuel pump relay clicks and it seems to prime, but for 5 seconds then it then stops, is this normal? done the usual, checked all fuses, put fresh fuel in it..

Check the block connector to the left of the ECU looking at it from the rear of the car mine done the same thing your describing and I found some damaged connections there. When I moved the connector about the pump primed and stayed on & fired up

yours is a 2.5 by looks of it so im not as familiar... but the plug your holding looks like the air temp and should be attached to the hose between the intercooler and throttle body... plug might be under the pipe.

the plug behind what you call the fuel filter (actually the oil breather) looks to be either the throttle position sensor or the boost pressure, if its the boost then it should have no impact on running only have low boost (well on a 3L so assume same on 2.5) but if its the thottle then this could be the problem.

See if you can find the plug that goes to it as it seems a few havnt been connected properly... I personally would do a check over all of them.

worth mentioning that on a 3L the fuel pump primes for a few seconds then goes off... only runs permanently when the car is running so it may be the same on the 2.5.

can you hear the fuel pump prime if not maybe fuse on engine bay bulk head worth a check

Possibly flooded. Put your foot to the floor and crank it over for a few seconds - see if that helps.

Seeing as its been sat in a paint shop for a few weeks and it's then spluttered into life but died I'd be looking at a dirty fuel filter too.

Yes it is a 2.5. The hose |(air temp) already has a plug connected, seems to meet at the loom where this plug comes from (there are 3, 1 air temp, 1 throttle body and this loose plug).

I cannot see anything might connect to that other socket. There is nothing loose or available.

Battery now flat. will try again in a few hours - if it is flooded it will be ok by then.

had a look over the fuses, connector blocks. all looks ok. tried starting again and its trying to catch, but just not quite firing enough to run on its own.

If it has an mbe ecu fitted. Looks like boost plug. And if you not got the solinoid bit. It won't plug in anywhere. Check your vacume pipes. It's a little square one on top of the plenum on the 3l with two vacuums going to it. So that may be doing nothing that plug

pretty much run out of time today. removed all relays and cleaned contacts, same with fuses. reseated the 3 ECU plugs, 1 of the relays near the ECU (of the 4 its the furthest right) has has extension wires soldered in so the relay is higher up the bulkhead (next to the fuses). Car spins freely and sounds like its catching, but doesn't fire.

just a thought... is that the lamba sensor plug? if it is then on the 3L it goes to the sensor in the rear exhaust bank and plugs into the loom around the rear spark plugs area.

not sure if this would make it a non starter, but certainly wouldnt help.

not sure, the plug/cable wont reach as far as the spark plugs, its gotta be local to the throttle boby area.

does anyone have a picture of the roll over valve? mine is hanging downwards loose.. I think its a fuel problem

If I remember correctly, it goes nowhere. I think this was covered on a thread years ago. I can't check as I now have a different ecu.

Hi Jason

The first picture is the idle control valve, this is not used and there's no plug for it so nothing to worry about with that.
Picture two is a plug for eletronic boost control, this is an upgrade that can be done to the 2.5l in you're case this isn't being used.

Have you checked its not out of fuel?

Hi, yes, thought that so I put 5 litres of fresh fuel into it. I will check the fuel delivery next chance I get, but that will be in a few weeks time! Today has been a learning curve of whats where, in what location etc, my 1st time with the car. To be continued!

Either dry out the plugs or put a new set in, sounds flooded to me. If you pop one out and it's wet it's guaranteed to be that.
