Track tyres

Sorry for yet another thread on tyres........the Michelin thread has just reminded me!

I'm looking to replace my 'track' tyres shortly, currently have Federal 595 RSR's, but really don't find them anywhere near grippy enough, was really disappointed at the 'Ring and Spa last year.
Basically whats everyones opinion on the best tyres to use, bearing in mind I'll use them for driving to the track and road use in summer also.

Michelin Cups?
Toyo R888?
Yoko A048?

Any others?

How much tread do the michelins come with new?

Mitchelin sport cups for me as well

I also love the 048's but they are 1.5kgs heavier per rear tyre! plus the cups are way way cheaper (50% less)

I use Pirelli Trofeos (replacement for the motorsport Corsas), but i think only AdrianW and myself use them -so a bit of a minority!
Cups maybe a bit longer lived as they were developed for heavier cars, but havn't used them personally.

If you want to go on track in the rain, consider Toyo R1R's. They're nearly as grippy as 888s in the dry but don't drop off anything like as much in the wet

I've just put on Toyo R1R's after advice from a tyre specialist who does a lot of track/race day tyres. I'll let you know how i get on with them round Bramnds Hatch on 6th June. If I end up in the catty litter i'll be sure to blame the new rubber.......

I ran for 2 years on 888's , very good alround tyre but very noisy and warmed up very quick but went of after 4 or 5 hot laps , mainly the rears first , my last set lasted 3000 miles . I have changed to cups this year , so far they are quieter and take longer to warm up , 2 full laps of Silverstone before they were working well but after 6 laps they did not go off like the 888's , this unless you do sprints is a big advantage . Michelin run different tyre compounds across the tyre , harder on the inside edge then softer to the outside , this helps with tyre wear on the inner edge when running lots of camber .

New personal best at the weekend , 2 up and in traffic proves to me I am getting on better with the cups , back at donnington next week so will know more after that .

+1 Ive been banging on about them for 3 years, for me there isnt a better track tyre. for the road i use Mich SP.
