I'm thinking of doing my first track day this year, and given where I live, Donington is nice and close and looks like a good track. On the website they quote noise restrictions, either 98 or 105 dB. Does anybody know how load a 3R is on a standard exhaust?

Not wanting to be turned away for bring too loud, I got tested in advance at 96 dB at Goodwood in preparation for a 98dB track day there, but when I arrived on the day I registered 103dB.
They told me to take it for a good run to get everything very hot and I then came out 'borderline'.
I suspect I was still well over 98 as I was warned a few times during the day.

That's interesting, mine seems A LOT louder after a good run - maybe even twice as loud. I'd imagine it would be as much as 3dB worse when it's hot. This is with standard 3L exhaust + cats too.

At Donington a 'normal' trackday will be 98db on drive past. This is not the same as 98db static. All standard exhausts used to be fine at Donny, but with the passage of time you may have lost wadding from the exhaust which will make it noisier and so I am reluctant to say you will definitely be OK. Also if you have any mods affecting induction noise that could also be problematic. I have a 6 yr old Roush exhaust with v little wadding left, but with quiet tail-pipes put on, I don' t have a problem at Donny.

go to donnington on a track day your not booked on and ask to have your car sound checked is the best way

95db, 100db and 101db - all at Brands... 1st time in the open part of the pit paddock, 2nd time was at the entrance to one of the garages (yeah, that's going to be good...) and lastly next to one of the garages in the lower paddock.

Depends which way the wind's blowing and how the marshall's feeling... 100db at Goodwood last summer became 95db when they "took a second opinion"... smile

Oh, and remember it redlines at 6K.

Thanks all. Some good advice. Not as simple as I thought. I do have the PA intercooler that may have increased induction noise a little. Sounds like getting a 'pre-test' is the way forward. Out of interest at what revs do they measure it at? Somebody mentioned at work today its 75% of the rev range, so thats 4500RPM? My engine is standard.

Yes - 4.5K revs is about normal for a static test. But remember at Donny (and Bedford)they tend to pull you for drive-by noise infringements. This makes it even more tricky because the registered noise level will be dependent on ambient temperature, wind speed and direction! If you're around 98db static, then I'm sure you'll be OK at Donny.
