Hi guys,

Recently I've noticed that when car is cold I can see the battery light flicker when lifting off.

If I turn off ignition and back on once warm it stops.

Tonight driving car with lights on I could constantly see the dial lights flickering.

Any ideas?

Can't you get access to a storage scope from work? see what it is, what voltage? AC/DC?

There is a specific wire mod to the alternators to stop this and it's not all cars, mine never flickers so it can be cured.

Mod was on the American forum I think?

Mine did it, then I changed the battery, now I'm pretty sure it doesn't do it.

probably a diode starting to fail, as I said I'd need to know exactly what it is.

That's what I was thinking, thought it might be the rectifier circuit on the alternators but Tux said he tried changing the alternator.

It don't have a clear signal when to charge the battery. The mod is. The plug that goes to alternator with the three wires to it. Pull that out. Pull back all the heat wrap. Cut the black wire 4 inches from the plug and cap off the end that goes towards the car. Then the 4 inches of wire that goes to the plug. Put a connection on it and put it on the main feed bolt on the side of the alternator. It's the same mod they done on the 99 mercury. It's inline with reverse lights speed sensor fuse 9 I believe and don't give a clear ignite to the condition of the battery. Hope that helps. Worked on few of our cars doing that mod

That doesn't make sense to me, if the lamp is flickering it is an excitation problem, i can't see how messing about with the regulation can stop the lamp flickering, if everything appears to be working OK I would put a resister in parallel with the lamp.

Fords called the mercury back to do as I just said. I don't no the details but it does work. And we done on a few. By following the call back instructions. How its wired the alternator don't get a clear signal of the condition of the battery. And doing what I said apparently it does well my light used to flicker. As well as my main lights. All that has stopped now

I think I will attempt Grants suggestion as its annoying and all I'm interested in doing is getting rid of it.

I had an alternator change a couple of years ago and my car does it and I would say it has got worse more recently, its almost a bit embarrasing as Im sure people think I'm flashing them
