I'm doing a track day in December and would like to get some in car video of the day. Any thoughts on cameras and best places to mount them? I prefer the in cabin shots. Can you mount them on the dashboard without having to glue / screw / weld it?

Get a GoPro

I made this to fit between harness mounts and can attach a digital camera. Then use a GOPRO out side for rear shots.

Agreed, get a GoPro, they are cool.

Nice angle when on the spoiler, just with the suction mount in this shot. Held firm past 140mph

thanks

Most times I've used a GoPro with the sucker they also insist that it has a secondary secure tie. I put it close to wing up right and cable tie it to that so if sucker lets go it won't fly into another car.

Thanks both. Great shot of your car, you can see the camera in the paint reflection! A GoPro it is then. Ebay looks to have plenty for sale. Would the suction cup stick to the dash if I wanted to internally mount?

Ive fitted the suction cap to the side window before, great pic as it gets all the induction noise etc... I safety tied it to the roll cage in the car and glad I did as it failed at over 100mph.

It also used to fall off when used on my snowboard so ALWAYS have a safety line smile

awsome bit of kit... I have the black edition that allows me to turn it on and off with my Iphone and also view what its seeing on the iPhone smile

I think the silver edition of the hero 3 has the wifi capacity aswell.

New hero3+ looks nice, makes my hero2 with wifi bacpac seem like a house brick

Yep what i'm saying is that the gopro hero 3 is avaliable in three models, Black, Silver and white.
Black has the best optics (Expensive)
Silver has the hero 2 optics (Middle Priced)
White has the hd hero optics (Cheapest)

All have wifi, so all can be controlled by the app on phones

Remember track day orginisers will not allow suction mounts of any sort, inside or outside.

Unless tied down with a secondary support

Pulled from a previous thread, unless this has changed:

To whom it may concern: (sorry if this is a repost, but it needs to be communicated)

As of very recently MSV has decided to ban the use of any suction or vacuum mounting systems for use with video cameras in car or on car.

I have spoken with them today to to get clarification on this stance. They have confirmed that until further notice they will not be allowing the use of these mounts at any of their tracks.

Only mounts which clamp on or bolt on will be allowed to be used to carry a camera irrespective of the weight of the camera system.

Their Terms and Conditions have not been amended to reflect this change in their conditions of use.

I have written to them and received a very polite reply from Nick at Brand Hatch (booking office). apparently an incident has taken place on track (at a location not disclosed) where a suction mount broke loose and caused the driver to lose control of the car and crash.

Their health and safety officer has issued a blanket ban on these products full stop. MSV are working on a way to potentially reintroduce these mounts and are in conversation with their lawyers for an amendment to their Terms and Conditions.

I have explained that it is neigh on impossible to affix a hard mount in to a normal road going car! also the proprietary head rest mounts may not always be possible to affix as so many modern cars no longer have the 2 metal posts holding up the headrest, but are integrated in to the back rest.

To this end and to expedite the situation i have offered to assist MSV's lawyer (as an avid track day enthusiast from a non partisan stand point / view) to achieve a middle ground where possibly only vacuum mounts are allowed (with a published capacity) to affix light weight camera systems to the windscreen.

I think we can only hope that they see sense soon and not allow the joy gestapo to ruin our enjoyment of track days and reviewing the aftermath.

Thanks all for the advise. I hadn't appreciated the 'rules' angle. It may well be I park the idea for now and have a look at a bolted fixing in the cabin. GoPro appears the way to go so that's my first action.

Pretty extreme, the camera must have been mounted on the drivers side window/door pillar. You would have thought that common sense should prevail and simply stipulate that cameras should be mounted on the passengers side.

When has a Health & safety ever been about common sense!!!! smile
I think this might have been a situation where the camera fell off and got its self jammed under the brake pedal. Even fitted to the passanger side, under hard cornering, things can easily find themselves on the floor of the drivers side!!

I think the best plan would be a Go-Pro with a clamp fixing which I think the new ones come with but are available on their own if required to fit to a second hand one.

I did think about getting another interior light, remove all the mechanism in it, and then screwing a gopro mount to it some how. Never got round to it, maybe next year!
