Since I bought my 3r 18 months ago the heater fan has never worked on speed one. I took the car out for a run today and it's now not working on speed two (speed three still working). I've checked the fuses under the dash and they are all fine and I can hear the relay clicking on and off when I turn the control knob. Is there anything else I can check or does it sound like the dreaded resistor pack has failed?

I know it's going to be the resistor, I just know it! frown

Yes I'm sure. I think I'll be getting the spanners out tomorrow to see what I can find. It may be an excuse to do the escort fan upgrade as the one in the noble is pretty scensoredt anyway. Im sure I remember reading something about a small access panel so you can get at the resistor but I've not had a look yet. I think bondy fitted a four speed fan (using speeds 2-4) which sounds like a good idea.

The resistor panel is next to the wiper motor side of the heater box, a pain to get out and the cheapest looking thing you'll ever see. I'd be interested in hearing how to do the Escort motor upgrade if someone has done it.

Thanks for the tip, I'll take a look tomorrow but I have to admit it's not a job I look forward to doing.

I got the resistor pack from the escort one (it's bigger) and wired it in and glued it in place.

This is it in the escort one (which by the way was to big for my 2.5).

I cut my box open.

That's great cheers bondy, at least I can see what I'm aiming for tomorrow.

Well, I removed the resistor today and it's definitely fcensoredked.

I think I'll go down the route of finding a better replacement rather than fitting another crappy one, but for anyone wanting to replace theirs its really not that difficult to get to. I had mine removed in under an hour and as others have said it's located behind the wiper motor. (The resistor is held in with two screws, behind a panel that's held on with four screws)

I used these kind of resistors in my last car. You need to work out what wattage and resistance you need though.

I just changed the resistor on mine a few weeks back, looked identical damage to yours. I ended up fitting just the same type which I got from SWLC (at a ridiculous cost of over £70!!)
The Elise guys have an improved version:

But the problem would be getting it to fit.

If you can find the resistance and source small enough ceramic resistors you could just solder them in place on the original unit...

Just use the one off the escort van, it works as I have had it on mine for years.

Does that need modifying to fit?

Wow, £70! That's just ridiculous. I like the look of the elise resistor and it's definitely an option, but it seems ours is off a rover and I've found a similar one on ebay for £7.50 (brand new) so I'll wait for that to turn up and see if it works. It has the same connector so it should pretty much be plug and play.

Tux, looking at the box the standard fan is in I'm not sure exactly how to get at it, I know some have cut the box open but that's not something I'd want to do. Does anyone know if it's possible to get at the fan unit by drilling out the rivets round the top of the fan box? If so then I'm up for upgrading it in the spring, then hopefully the aircon will do a better job of cooling the cabin.

I've got my heater and blower out (dash and front end stripped out of the car)... despite its inefficiency its not a light unit so its got me wondering if I can engineer a lighter setup with better blowing... before I start from scratch anyone got any ideas or theories that i could try?

Incase anyones interested I fitted my resistors today and all is working well, and at a grand total of £7.50. I bought a similar one (for a rover) off ebay and swapped the four metal connections over to the old plate, then soldered the new resistors in the positions I needed them. It may be my imagination but speeds one and two seem to be slightly faster now, not sure if the resistor wire was slightly larger or if age has anything to do with it? I'd still like to swap the fan for a better one but I'll wait until the warmer weather arrives.

For info, no drilling out the rivets does not allow it to be opened (at least on the 2.5). The unit seems to wrap around and u have to remove a lot more to get the cover off.

I only had to cut mine open as the brushes on the motor had failed, could get the escort one to fit so took the brushes out of it and while there I used the escort resistor.

Would be nice if someone finds a better unit that fits as I can get at mine easy now.

Just take whole fan box off.
Undo the 4 small ss bolts out,2 on each side at the back, 2 self tappers bottom front.
Run a small long blade along top through silicon n sides.
pull up from front, this was easy on mine as I had front floor off so I could stand inside chassis.
You will have to use a bit of pressure but it will prize off.
Then you can clean out fan and heater matrics while its out.
also while its out clean up chassis that the box sits on.
Really worth doing imo.

Yeah, I thought drilling out the rivets sounded too simple I should've known. I think I'll look into removing the complete fan box in the summer and if I find a decent replacement then I'll report back. It's now working fine so when (if) it stops raining and dries out I can use the car without having the fan on full speed.
