After Elvington, the light is coming on under fairly heavy braking.

Me thinks its just fluid required as the pads have worn down and the pedal gets slightly longer, haven’t had time to check.

Would you agree?

If it's doing it when you brake hard, then that sounds like the correct diagnosis.

If it isn't get things checked out!

Hmm. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, in that it absorbs water from the air. If you have opened one and left it around, then at a minimum, assuming you created a good airtight seal when you screwed it back on (doubtful) it would have absorbed the water in the air in the gap.

Water makes the pedal very soggy once the brakes heat up - for the sake of a few quid I'd buy some new stuff....?

Agreed.

I use Castrol SRF DOT 4 which provides a harder pedal and resists fade better but it requires changing every 6 months due to it's hydroscopicness (new word invented )

I've never found a Halfords that stocks it... I think you'll need to find a "proper" motor factors (those funny looking places that look if they haven't changed in 50 years )
