Went to check the oil and the top of my dipstick snapped off! The plastic had perished.

Ended up having to take car to local friendly motorsport garage as no amount of attempts could get the remaining stick out. Took over two hours to remove and refit (I was there all the time & can vouch for this being genuine). £50 lighter and still need to pay for the new dipstick.

Make sure you grease the top of your dipstick before inserting...................

Cue Kenneth Williams type responses............

My thoughts exactly, I insisted the mechanic who did it took it for a test drive as a reward for his labour, he was a happy chappy after that

Been there done it - you're wrong and been fleeced

its perished because of the heat coming up from the turbo - the same heat that melts the oil filler caps - greasing it will not stop it getting hot. It will go again eventually.

2hrs to get it out? it took me 15 mins, Small drill drill into the retained stub. Then with a next size up self tapper gently screw into the hole till the dipstick head wants to turn (no more or you'll start expanding the plastic and it will start to grip the sidewalls) then just pull it out.

The replacement part is a standard ford part, costs about £6 if I remember, I bought 2 last time. Best solution would be for someone to get some heads machined up in alloy. The "Head" is rivetted to the actual flexing dipstick.

Et. Volia - our resident Paul "I've raced it so I know all about most problems, and some more that you don't even know you have" C comes up with the answers yet again.

I'm feeling redundant arond here lately!!!!

(Although I did melt 6 oil filler caps!)

Aha, yeah but no but yeah but, having done all the above very carefully, the bloomin thing still wouldn't budge, that's when I took it to the garage, who very kindly stopped working on their Puma WRC (which had hit a tree in Cropton Forest at the weekend, no great damage...........until an Impreza landed on top of it........Ouch!)to carry out the five minute job.....We then discovered that the one retaining bolt head had been sheared off a while ago.........hence over two hours.

Bless em, they were even going to give me their dipstick from the Puma, sadly didn't fit, suggested they switch the engines over but they didn't seem keen for some reason, personally thought 2.5mondeo V6 was a fair swop for some unknown engine with Millington stamped on it

How about some heat reflective aluminium tape?

It works very well at keeping parts refreshed.
