A windscreen story
Discussion
I got a chip/crack on my 3R's windscreen a couple of weekends ago.
I called my insurance (Tesco) and sorted out the claim with them. Autoglass got involved and within 7 days a new one was fitted.
I am very pleased with the finish. It's actually better than the factory fitted one, i.e. Autoglass finished off the area where the dashboard meets the screen with a nice felt. You can hardly see it but it's much better than before when I could see uneven glue all over the place.
Top marks to the factory for getting a screen to Autoglass in Blackpool so quickly too

Nice one! I presume that this was treated as a claim (as it wasn't a repair)?
First sunny day on Saturday and guess what - the dash top is a mess with scratches !
I am absolutely fuming. My car is in for a service today and dealer is having a look at the situation.
I have spoken to Autoglass but I fear the worst, i.e. we didn't do it sir you will have to prove it.
I guess it will be costly to repair/replace this?

Coincidentally I have just discovered a stress crack in the windscreen, which seems to be getting visibly bigger each time I see it.
Is this going to be an insurance job -it isn't exactly accidental damage? If its not, how much do these things cost.
Cheers,
Sam
Approx £500 plus fitting.
My insurance covered it. But be very wary of who does the fitting. Stress to the company to cover everything up and if you can hang around while they do the work.

Sorry Dave, off topic but how are you finding the car after the shakey start? Hope you are enjoying it.
As for windscreen - if you can put up with different tint you could try to get a Lotus one as previously mentioned? Have you double checked with your insurers that the breakage isn't covered? I'd have though that unless you did it deliberately it should be covered?

I'm actually struggling at the moment to get a windscreen for my car as the factory qouted me over £300 for delivery!!!!
The window was broken through my own fault so will have to stump up the cash, but being in edinburgh doesn't help!!
Anyone any ideas???
Dave
You should never have to pay for a windscreen yourself (unless you deliberatly smashed it, but then the insurance company would have to pay for it).
A quick call saying "my windscreen is now broken / cracked, can you fix it" is all that is normally required

Dealer has taken a look at the dash and is concerned that it won't be a simple job to remove the scratches. Anybody else know of any techniques?
What's wrong with your dash? I had what "looked like" deelp scratches on mine once but took care of it myself (with some advice from Joust)?
Are you sure they're scratches - is white showing through the black?

No white showing. In bright sunshine you can see large scored areas.
So what's the procedure then?

OK, no white showing means that the "scratches" are not deep!
I cleaned my dash once with my usual chamois, (synthetic as I don't use real one's any more) that I thought was clean, and the dash ended up with what looked like deep scratches all over it (maybe there was some grit on the cloth!) - I was beside myself!
Anyway, the dash is made in Germany (in case you wondered!) of a weird and wonderful white material painted black (even the factory don't understand it) and the surface can mark easily (as you know!) - get some SIMPLE soap (that the brand - it has no chemicals or dyes in it) and lather-up a SOFT bristle nail-brush - gently rub the marked areas removing the suds with a lint-free cloth/chamois each time and them replace the brush with a soft cloth and reapply the soap a couple more times if necessary. The funny thing is that you can't see whether it has worked until the surface dries - so wait and look!
Hopefully you have the same problem that I did - good luck!
I also have a pot of the correct black paint from the factory for the odd spot when necessary.
The dash is indeed a very strange substance. The soft top layer is actaully paint that is sprayed onto a funny sort of composite surface.
It's similar in make to the dash on the Elise, which is how I found out that ordinary soap (not detergent) was a good lubricant to then smooth over any scratches as written above.
The surface is "maluable" to some extent it seems, and hence you can smooth it over quite easily.
The main problem is the contortions you have to do to get to the very end of the dash!
