GTO-3 or GTO-3R
Discussion
I am having great trouble in deciding want to get. a GTO M12 3 or a GTO M12 3R? On paper there seems to be not much in it as far as performance is concerned. Does any one have experience in both. I have test driven the 3R. This felt great. A friend has the M12 3R and he felt he wished he had gone for the 5-speed gear box.
Any thoughts on this.

If you can afford it the 3R has a more modern looking nose (it's the lights) but, apart from that, there is little difference to a "GTO 3". These is a little more soundproofing and, if you opt for the 6-speeg gearbox and trackday sump you'll be relatively up-to-date.
Good luck - either choice will make you grin!

Maetro, there is a similar thread on the next page, about a week old, some good answers to your questions there. I think its a personal and financial thing. If you can afford a 3R then go for one of them. Oh and the 6 speed box is a better bet than the 5. IMHO Greg
six is most certainly better than the 5 as it's stonger...
We introduced the six-speed 'box because it could take more torque than the five-speeder, and that was always going to be important as we launched models with bigger outputs (M400/M14). However, in the 3/3R models there should be no problems, if the car has been correctly maintained.
Key advantages with the six-speeder are as follows:
1. Ratios more evenly spaced, though first and second gears are slightly higher than in the five-speeder;
2. Taller top gear which runs to 26.5mph per 1000rpm, making it more relaxed on a motorway, for example (2650rpm at 70mph). The five-speeder's top gear will turn the engine at just over 3000rpm at the national limit.
3. All six-speeders are mated to Quaife torque-sensing diffs, which work on a similar principle to an LSD, but use helical gears and promote less understeer on tighter bends. Most five-speed boxes use open (conventional) diffs and do not put power down as effectively.
The GTO-3 is still a cracking car and can be had for less money, so please don't dismiss it. It really depends what your priorities are.
