Two problems I've had, in fact, over the past couple of months.

Firstly the fan belt, somehow I've managed to shred 2 of them and if I leave the car garaged for over a week, I get that awful screaching noise until it has been out for a 30 minute blast. I understand that this is probably because of the load on the belt, especially if the battery has drained by being left idle, but wanted to check if it's a common fault? MV say they cannot fix this currently, so why is everyone not complaining about this?

Secondly, engine note at idle. I'm advised by MV that I have the latest ECU mapping, but at times (not always)the needle is like a yo-yo between 8 and 10,000 when she's idling. Is this known as chasing or something? Again is this common?

I suppose technically that's 4 questions but maths was never my strong point.

Cheers

Known as hunting. However I'm guessing you can't hear the engine actually reving to 10k so its probably a gauge/sensor issue?

If its revving to 10k, you've got a serious problem!

Not had the belt problem. Maybe you should consider a battery conditioner to keep it topped up?

That will be the fan belt to loose if it is making that noise.

Check the alignment over the pulleys. I shreeded one and we adjusted its seating. Not perfect I know, but a spacer on the middle pulley (hope I got that right) may help.

Whilst the engine is running, just look at the belt and see if it is running true.

The noise could be caused by a faulty alternator. Run the car for 5 mins with the screeching, turn off and feel how hot the alternator feels. If red hot, chances are the bearings have gone. This can be caused by the fan belt not running true.

If these don't help, talk to the factory.

Hope all goes well and you get a speedy resolve.

Oops, yes clearly I mean 800-1000.

What did I say about maths?

Mine used to hunt a bit, was a dodgey lambda sensor apparently.

Yep, not needed to use the air-con yet this year. Maybe this weekend.....

I've had a squeal on the belt recently. A dash of WD-40 in the Aircon comp. wheel sorted that. Have never thrown a fanbelt though.

I don't want to question what you've been told, but when mine was idling up and down like that, it was the ECU failure.... If you've definitely got the latest ECU it's almost certainly Lambda.

Could also be a gasket leak I think. I went through this the other month. It wasn't cheap!
