Now had my tracker for 3 years having swapped it between various cars along the way.

It cost over £1000 to install and had a 3 year subscription.

Just got my renewal through the post:

1 Year - £234
3 Years - £484

This is for a Navtrak Proactive.

Is this excessive or what !

I'm getting mine installed next week £349 for the tracker £120 for a years subscription and £96 for the camera GPS detection. So £565 installed and a years sub not too bad..

Then a battery charger/conditioner would be advisable.

Mine came with the car - not sure what make. Renewal cost is £99 p.a. or £299 for life (ie if for as long as the car is kept by the same owner).

Its a Trackstar the Camera detector won't use any more juice than the tracker seeing as they both work off the same GPS system

Well I spoke to Navtrak and they are taking the stance that it's still value for money because it's still the best Tracker on the market.

Not entirely convinced but what can I do.

I feel like they are holding a big gun to my head and have got me by the you know whats !

I'm probably opening up a large can or worms here but...

Why have a tracking device?

Your insurer will pay out (market rate) for a total loss (which is the main use for a tracking device).

Why not choose an insurer that does not require a tracking device and save the cash?

Comments?!

PS - I am not saying whether I have one or not here!

Beacuse..., if for no other reason - If the car gets nicked, I would really love it for the b******s to get caught.

That's interesting.

I had Tracker (the really basic one) come with one of my cars. I wanted to move it to my other car and replace it with a better version.

Tracker told me
1) I could not remove it from the current car as it was keyed to the VIN.
2) I could not put it on another car.
3) My only options were either a transfer of ownership and activation (subject to various fees, obviously) or else fit a brand new Tracker and leave the existing one on the car but unactivated.

I paid the activation fee and subscription fee, but to be honest I don't know why I bothered. It is the really basic one where you have to notice the car has been stolen and then phone them to tell them to start looking for it.

...and it's surely doing one's bit for reducing the incidence of successful theft, therefore hopefully bringing down insurance costs and insurance premiums for all

(says the man who bought a car that has one fitted, but is not saying whether or not he's activated it )

How do I test mine is working.

Tracker said they can come out and test it but they charge about £80 IIRC for the privelage.

Should I just push it up the road and see if I get the call? Or will that scramble a set of jet fighters and put the country on national alert??

I often push it out of the garage about 10 feet down the drive and never get a call. How far does it need to go before its activated??

Is it one where you have to carry around a little radio card to stop it going off (e.g. navtrack proactive). If its one of them then you can just start it without the card and it will call base.

They only let you have a certain number of false alarms before billing you I'm told.

If its a different type of tracker where you have to notify them its missing, it may not be gps & mobile phone based. The older cheaper ones were like pagers where you send them a signal to start broadcasting and then you need a special piece of kit given to some police forces to detect it. Dunno what the range is on those.

I have tracker monitor which has a built in movement sensor, if the car moves without the ignition being on and de-activating the monitor then I should get a call to tell me its moving.

I thought they all were like this. The Tracker Horizon is the one up from mine which also has gps to pinpoint its wearabpouts.

Guess a long push up the street is in order tomorrow then!!

Doesn't the navtrak renewal include warranty cover as well?

I don't think it's such a bad deal for 3 years peace of mind...
