Gearchange upgrade
Discussion
Dear All,
Despite my bad luck at the weekend I want to report on the M400 gearchange. I had mine changed to this a few weeks back. It is well worth doing. The M400 gearchange is like a rifle bolt, it slots from gear to gear with the lightest touch and is really precise. Compared to the previous version I had it is a highly recomended upgrade, worth probably a second a lap and almost no fluffed gearchanges.
Regards

What does this involve - is it a gearbox change or is it just down to the selection mechanism?
Its both ends. The gearbox end gets a new set of external selectors and the cabin end gets a new assembly which itself is then held in place by a modified mounting plate. There's quite a lot of work on the tunnel to accomodate the new shifter.

It is superbe, although mine seems to have gone "off" after 6000 miles and now is quite notchy on 2nd to 3rd.
Talking to Micknall the adjustment is key - if I knew what I was doing I'd do it myself - but I'll just leave it for the imminent service.
I can only summise that it takes a bit of time to bed in from new, but that doesn't seem to be much of a downside for the quickness of the change.

Alternatively if your old style setup is feeling a lot worse than it was new, you could pay to get it sorted out. Mine is actually pretty damned good now having had various bits of the linkage replaced as the old ones had worn. Its not a rifle bolt by any means, but compared to how it was when I bought the car its pretty accurate and precise now. You still can't really rush changes though.

Just to clarify, if you have a five-speed 'box and you want to upgrade to a six-speeder, c/w Quaife ATB diff' and M400-spec gear selecter the total cost would be £6115 + VAT for the factory to complete the work.

or £7200 inc as I said
You could trade up to a 6 speed 3R for not much more which makes more sense IMO.
I have asked and was told that I could buy the parts on there own it was about - £650 inc VAT for all the parts. I have driven an M400 and IMO I can't justify 1550+VAT for the upgrade but might consider doing it myself. From memory the main parts required are: Selector arms on the gearbox end, Cables and bushes plus the Selector unit it's self which is now incorporated with the gearstick. The cables are shorter on the new system they go straight from the top of the gearbox directly forward into the tunnel rather than around the engine as in the old system. The old system had a separated selector mounted under your elbow then linked with rods to the gearstick, this of course adds to the wear points and poteintial 'slop' in the system.
Paul - have you actually seen what is required to be changed to the existing tunnel? As far as I know some different mounting points are required to be welded on. The problem is the carpet has to be removed followed by removal of all the sheet metal around the tunnel. Having driven the M400 I would like to be able to have a shorter throw on the change - Now I think the selector is pretty much a sealed unit and therefore it may not be possible to make any changes this end (correct me anyone who has actually seen the unit). Therefore it may be possible to make changes at the gearbox end in order to create a 'shorter throw' - simply make the arms on top of the gearbox shorter.
Anyway enough of my ramblings I've probably got it all wrong!
