Drive belt / pulley noise
Discussion
As a Noble newbie, (I have owned blot's M12 for 10 days now), my familiarity with this engine is virtually non-existant.
At any engine speed above idle, the "whirring" noise from the drive belt is far more than i am used to, (reminds me of alternator bearing noise). Much of it appears to come from the larger pulley, top centre of engine - water pump maybe?? It is also very apparant when driving.
Now, i accept that 99% of engines are surrounded by engine bay etc, so much of the general engine noised is dampened/absorbed, and this one is fully exposed.
Should i be concerned?? Tony looked after the car totally, and it was last serviced by Noble last month.

Engine bay can get hot and dry - I recently had similar sounds although mine were more evident on idling rather than under power. Cured by a liberal dosing of WD40 around pulleys/ belts. Might be worth trying this before going down the replacwement route.
WD always works for me instantly but they tell me that it strips lubricant so we should use something else.
A word of warning, if you use silicone spray on anything that has to grip, ie. drive belts, then you will be in serious trouble, don't use it.
WD should be ok, but if the belts Are noisy, you should check to make sure that they are not dry or cracked.
Other than this, remove or slacken the belts and spin the various drive pulleys to see if they are noisy.
Steve.

It's a funny thing this noisy belt thing !
I've owned a Noble for a few years, and have had a few belts fitted to my car, however the last 2 belts have been a real pain. They squeak like mad. I wonder if the factory have changed supplier?
BTW don't put WD on the belts, it makes them slip, and willr educe the grip on the alternator, which will in tern put more load on the battery.
I have however noted that if you let the cat idle up to the temp where the fans cut in, the belt does not squeak.
It's no big deal for me as I alwyas run the car for a while before I drive it to get everything up to temp, but from cold it is a real pain.

You need belt lubricant normally which is a modified silicon spray - Halfords sell it (or they do at my local one).
You should spray it onto a rag and just lubricate by gently touching the *side* of the belts, as that is where the squeeking noise comes from. As long as you don't get any on the face of the belt it won't create slip.
You only need a small amount.

Same here! The last one had some odd, patch lick patterns on the back of the belt, so I assumed it was generally worn. Changed the belt and 1 month later the field mice with megaphones are back....

Be real CAREFUL if doing this with the motor running -- a friend lost a finger doing this a few years ago whilst being careful -- he didn't actually realise for some seconds either !

Good point - perhaps do this with the engine off?!
ps - anyone want a keyring?
