Well, after much deliberation I finally took the plunge and got myself a very nice 53 reg GTO 3R on Wednesday.
It's in very good nick with only 6000 on the clock and looks good in silver (and I hate silver normally).
So far I've had 2 minor niggles -
I popped into Vegantune after buying the car to enquire about servicing and noisy(er) exhausts. While I was there they looked over the car for me and discovered a coolant leak in the engine bay which they fixed there and then. Thanks Terry and Richard. I really appreciate the way you helped me and the genuine enthusiasm you have for the marque and your obvious expertise. I know where all my servicing work will be done, despite the long trip up.
Petrol smell in cabin - tightened the filler cap nut and reseated the big O ring which seems to have cured it.
Things done so far and planned....
Today I moved the air filters from the bulkhead to the intercooler duct. I know there are various schools of thought as to which is the better location, but the constant whooshing noises were pi55ing me off
2 hours in the garage and I had it cracked! Only problem was the long flexi pipe had been crushed by whoever moved the filters to the bulkhead (idiots). 5 minutes in the vice and it was as good as new. Not sure if it's my imagination but the car seems to pull harder now. It certaily sounds better (IMHO of course).
Next job is to fit the reverse sensing kit I bought. Call me a wimp if you like but I just can't judge the rear of the car when parking!
Anyway, I'm enjoying every minute in the car and looking forward to the summer. I can't believe how many people stop and stare every time I go out in it.
Hope to meet up with some of you guys and gals at some point.

There were 3 silver ones in bits and another with tinted windows outside waiting to be pulled apart .... or maybe it'd been done, I dunno which was yours (1 GTO3 and 3 3Rs plus the blue one).

Each to their own on the noise front - if you're happy that's great. I just prefer the sound of the exhaust to the whooshing noises
. I'm now on the hunt for either a recirculating BOV or one that doesn't go "PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST" every time I lift off the throttle. Any ideas anyone? Idiots - No I meant the idiots who squashed the inlet pipe (from the RHS bulkhead to the rear turbo) Probably the dealer who did the job
. Needless to say the car won't be going there again! Since I unsquashed the pipe, the car seems to be even faster! (but I suppose if the pipe had 50% of its croess section reduced then the car would have been running at 75% air flow).

Got it Plipton! I test drove a 3 and loved the wooshes. Was not for about 2 hours of driving my 3R on the day I collected it that I realised there were no woshes! So I called the factory immediatly to get them to make it woosh again!
The noises are still the same from outside the car (ie, for people on the roadside) whether you have the filters in the IC bay or on the bulkhead. Point being that fitting a BOV does not actually make much (if any) more noise than the filters do anyway.
I have the Faulks performance one and can't really hear it tbh. Does inprove gearchange and throttle response though.
Not convinced a recirc valve would give any real improvement at all, but am no tech.

Well it goes like a scalded cat really!
The ECU upgrade was rather forced as the old one packed up.
The omex unit that's in there now is nice and flexible so we've tinkered a bit.
One of the main differences is that it loves to rev. The torque keeps climibing all the way up and builds really smoothly.
We built this into the map as mine still has the fixed(real man's) diff and 5sp. Big spikes in the torque tend to lunch these on modded ones.
The IC is fab at staving off the heatsoak associated with the standard ones and the BoV gets you boosing earlier on the way up.

Only to add that the replacement IC will also reduce the Darth Vader noises as it allows things to breath properly. I'm unsure as to whether it'll cause you to drink more.
I've got the Faulks Performance BoV which has a bit of foam on it to keep the noise down, although the foam has blown off mine now and I can't be bothered to fit the (improved) replacement that Matt kindly sent me ... the public do like the psssst noise though and I'm kinda used to it now.
