As you may be aware, there are many criteria upon which to judge an exhaust, however the most important factor is undoubtedly the following, demonstrated today at Silverstone.

It produces flames.

Sadly no as we were going driving not prancing around like Martin does with cameras Flames come out of both sides independently sometimes, and also both at once other times. Sounds good too.

Worty - It was a Goldtrack day, although most of the paddock was flooded with FIA GT people setting up for Saturdays race. Shame you didn't spot us!

Mr Washy. His car was pulling remarkably well too, although I don't believe he could have had me on the straight despite his assertions! I'm sure he'll weigh in soon, now that I've said that

Well there are other uninteresting factors like his car seeming to run cooler etc, and the fact it sounded great (although possibly too loud for some venues). But who cares eh?

Had the whole gamut of cars out today, from crazy american 70s race cars with straight through exhausts (severely crashed) to idiots in Sharans who took the line and wouldn't let you past in a Noble/GT3... Prize chump award goes to the scooby that didn't want to let me and Washy past and came off the track onto an escape road as a result (via a large stretch of grass). He then drove straight back on the track and didn't return to pits to check the car over. Top one.

We both had lessons with Calum Lockie. Awesome, he got me going so much quicker.

Oh, how I laughed! Brilliant opening to the thread Dan.

Oi! I kept out of your slip stream specially too!! I was surprised myself but there was significant gainage going on all the way down Hanger Straight.

Interesting day. Never seen such a mixed paddock. Calum's instruction was fantastic. Raised the bar for both of us by a huge amount.

Did anyone mention the FLAMES?!

In all seriousness credit to Trevor and Roush for such a cracking product.

Pleased that you're loving the car again Wahsy!

I am getting more and more tempted by the exhaust now!

I want flames and over-run cakkle too!

Is there any over-run cakkle? (bangs and pops)

Ah but you neglect the time I realed you in on the hanger straight I'm sure your bricklike car was benefitting from a wide radius slip stream if at any point you did gain on me on the straight, and I still don't remember it. Power to weight isn't everything sunshine

Ah Ha, so its plagiarism. The first "flamer" was of course the PLans Motorsport exhaust;

and a close up

How does the Rousch one compare with this? One downside to having a flamer is that the detonations in the exhaust that result in the flames destroy your Lambda sensors which then fall apart and are ingested by the turbos. Shortly after the long lens picture was taken (at the Rockingham Noble Factory day bye the way) I had to have both turbos rebuilt.

You win some, you ........

I still have the flamer exhaust but I no longer flame.

Paul,

With the 2.5, the lambdas are upstream of the turbos but with all subsequent cars, the lambdas are post-turbo,and therefore not going to cause the problems you experienced. I have seen lambda sensors destroyed with the standard exhaust, so I don't believe flames themselves are the cause. Also, pre-turbo, the exhaust temperatures are significantly hotter than post-turbo (simply due to the expansion across the turbo, for a start), and the sensors are sensitive to temperature.

For those that asked, I believe washy reported popping on the overrun too.

# Bar stool Porsche baiting mode
I take it with all the winking that you're joking?! The fact that the M400 was even able to play with a GT3RS on a circuit that clearly favours the Porsche speaks volumes The time you reeled me in was perhaps when I was driving like an 'idiot' and not using 100% throttle plus short shifting at 6Krpm?! I don't recall you reeling me in on that last session when I decided to use 6,500rpm and stopped driving the brooklands/luffield complex like a Wendy!

#Honest mode
Purely out of interest what were you hitting on the start finish straight? I didn't look at the speedo but the rev counter was at least at 6,5K rpm in fifth and I occasionally used 6th if I nailed it through Woodcote. Doing the maths that suggests a 135+mph speed. I recall Calum commenting on how quickly we passed 130mph along there. I was more focused on braking for Copse!!!

Back to the exhaust! Curiously oil temperature sat around 110C all day. Not sure what that's about but can only assume the freer flowing exhaust and ceramic coating is doing something useful. I guess the big speed carried around most of Sillystone helps too but then Bedford is fast across a lot of the circuit and it easily went over 120C there on a much cooler day. It now pops and crackles on the overrun a treat.

Ash has posted that he thought his car was running cooler, too!

Agree, I don't know what that's all about - perhaps there's generally less heat from the front turbo area and that allows more air cooling of the sump?

Washy - I didn't look at my speedo on the start finish straight, but think I was only ever in 4th. It's not an area where I push it as the consequences of running wide coming out of Luffield would be disasterous, and Copse is the corner I'm most cautious/scared of. I wouldn't have been setting any records there!

Braking into Stowe I was seeing 137 indicated although definitely more to come if I braked a bit later and carried more speed into it, and more importantly nail chapel + beckets. Hard though as I was normally mired in traffic at that point.

I'm wondering what a decent lap time for road cars is at Silverstone. By the end we seemed to be shifting reasonably well compared to the rest of the field. Well except for those radanails

p.s. Washy's car definitely held its own against a GT3 RS. It appeared to be running much better yesterday than I've ever seen before.
