Cam Timing...........

Was chatting to a friend in the know last week about the cam timing on the 3's and I would like to know more. Apparently the cam timing on the 3's is set to a "safe" position that reduces power so as not to put too much stress on the 5 speed box and diff.

I may have this all wrong, but I understand that cars with the 6 sp 'box and LSD could easily run the original cam setup but that it was left the same as the earlier cars.

Can/should we 6 speeders get it changed and if so what are the details and how does it all work?

Hmmmm I'm not sure that's right - the 3s can easily strip the standard diff if provoked and I believe Noble quotes the same power/torque figures for both cars.

However, I don't have a 3 and a 3R to try back to back so I may be wrong

my guess is you have standard cams from a mondeo in there

you can adjust your cam timing with a set of vernier pulleys

the best way to adjust them is with a rolling road - that way you can tell which setting gives the best power

i'm sure a set of performance cams could make the car much crisper and more rev free

Mmmmm. I am saying that all 3's are the same, even though the ones fitted with the 6 speed 'box and lsd could run a better cam setup. The 400's run a different (normal) setup in there that gives a better curve IIRC.

Has anyone changed their cam timing?

All 3s and 3Rs run the same cam timing. The internals of the engine are also different to the M400s, it's not just cams for the M400, and there was a reason for their change. I do not advise anyone to mess with the cam timing unless you're prepared to consider the rest of the engine or run the risk of premature parts failure. To say nothing for the mapping....
