Ack my Turbo! (I think) Plus christmas = drive :D

Happy Christmas guys!
Hope everyone is having an awesome holiday... turkey sandwich overdrive at present

Trips from Lincolnshire to Northamps. on christmas day and back on boxing day night... absolutely awesome! Dry and not another car on the road, very best driving experience yet, a little surreal but it felt like having the whole country as your own track... not seeing another car for over an hour is a rare thing these days!

Anyway onto the main stapple of the noble forums... mechanical problems!!!

I think i have a serious problem here. This is going to be tough to explain, because my biggest clues are audio based.

Ignition is fine.
Engine idles fine.
Blipping the throttle is where the problems start.
Im hearing a gas type noise, on blips... its almost like the normal sucking in sound... but broken up and not smooth.... pffffffffffffff pfff pfff pfff ppffff pfffffffffff. It's the same when accellerating the car.

I imagine its a turbo issue, because when driving I can hear the normal sounds I'm used to, and then on top of those sounds... these strange broken up noises. I.e. One of the turbos is functioning properly and one is not.

This whistling, only occurs under acceleration... and is broken up as described above. I can't really see it being anything else but a turbo issue... can anyone think of anything else it could be?

I'm going to take it to the garage asap... but my main question is... if it IS the turbo failing... is it ok to drive it in this condition down to garage etc... or can I create some even worse problems doing this?

sounds like a loose turbo, youll have to crawl under it and do the bolts up.................or get someone else to do it

Yep - agree with Adrian. Turbo-to-downpipe nuts working loose is about as common a problem as exhaust brackets failing. Trouble is the turbo bolts are a b****r to get to. If you'r lucky it might just be the rear turbo which is slightly easier to get to especially if you have the original exhaust system.
Check out the 5 nuts attaching the turbo to the exhaust downpipe - if they are rock solid then it's back to the drawing board I'm afraid, but if loose , tighten
Even when tightened, they will simply work loose again at the next spirited drive, so get the car back down to Skippy and he will conjure up a simple and permanent solution for you
If it is just loose nuts/bolts car is fine to drive; but if it is something else then 'fraid I can't comment.
[PS I'd also have a stern word with Santa if he didn't bring you a Roush exhaust for Christmas!]

Dan - did you fit the blow off valve? I seem to remember there was a similar thread sometime ago [I can't find it now] where the problem turned out to be a faulty blow off valve spring IIRC. Just a thought...

I'll 2nd that Humpy.

Its likely to be that and a simple fix if you have a dump valve.

Otherwise, try getting someone else to blip the throttle and get your head in to hear where that noise is coming from.

Sounds like a simple thing and not a turbo dying.

Ok, got the torch and tools out!

Removed rear clam and got at the rear turbo. Getting my dad to blip the throttle, I'm 95% sure the offending strange noise is being emitted by that turbo. The noise is bad on very initial blip and then really bad after the blip on the wind down... Obviously it's at its very worst when driving and under hard acceleration.

Everything, everywhere was tight. All the bolts tight, triple checked the ones connecting the turbo to the exhaust. Tight. I listened closely again, and it really does sound like its coming from inside the turbo itself.

I'm gonna see skip on tuesday... fingers crossed!

Dan - Common(ish) cause of blown turbos are the chewing up and spitting out of gaskets, and even the odd lambda sensor has been minced, but no worries, Skip will sort it. Others might have an idea of how much a re-cond turbo is likely to be (worse case scenario.

Skip took a look today, got out his special listening tube device and deduced it was the gasket between exhaust and turbo that was fubar.

Quite cool to hear the offending noise isolated down Skip's rubber tube! haha.

Estimated repair cost = 300 + cost of gasket.

Also RobP - We got talking about roush again... Skip showed me this old silver bucket of a noble out back there that happened to have a roush fitted! ... I got to have a listen. Sounds awesome!

Already missing the car.

ah you got it back again. I might think about coming home for a visit then. Now that there's a decent reason for going home .
