What brand of fuel?

Whilst out the other day I had had to refill at a BP garage(Normally use Shell). Anyway I went out this morning in the Nob and it felt quite lazy and didn't seem as quick.

So off I went to my friendly Shell garage and filled the tank with OptiMax as I had only put a small amount of BP in. After a short while all was good and the car seemed sooo much more responsive. It was boosting a lot quicker and the scary aceleration was back, wahoo.

So my question is what fuel do you lot use?

You may think I'm talking boll**k above, but It really did seem to make a difference.

Well I had yet another fantastic day in the motor. I wouldn't sell her for any amount of dollar at the mo.

I tend just to use anything 97RON+. We've got Tesco 99RON locally, so now that isn't full of crap I'm back to using that.

To be honest the only fuel that DID make any noticable difference was the V-Power 100RON out in Germany. Some really big pops and bangs on my then standard 3R. All other times I think it's just been diffrent air temps that have really made the change.

I believe you would have to alter your timing to get any advantage from the higher octane fuels.
All the cars are set uo to run on basic 95 octane petrol.
You'll definitley notice a decrease in power now that we're enjoying a few hot days weather.

My (2.5 2002) Owner's Manual says:

"...your Noble should always be refuelled using Super Unleaded (98 RON) fuel. The engine management has been developed around these parameters, and hence only in emergency situations should the vehicle be run on standard (95RON) unleaded fuel."

I don't know if the 3.0 is different.

Micknall always said unless the cars were mapped for it you would get less than 1% difference between 95 and higher octane fuels. I still always run which ever Super unleaded I'm nearest at the time.

Is anyone really claiming they'd notice the difference between two forecourt fuels? 95 RON or 98 RON Shell or Tesco and you'd be able to tell one from the other? Silicone aside methinks this is complete and utter cr*p.

Com on boys lets have some real discussion on this forum rather than this hairdressers stuff.

Confirmed on U.S. dynos--virtually no power enhancement with increased octane UNLESS boost and ECU map and are adjusted to take best advantage of slow burn characteristics.
Conversely, using lower than recommended octane fuel can cause pre-ignition "knock", which can lead to serious engine damage.

Yep, I fill mine up with pretty much anything "super" and can't really notice any difference

The main benefit of premium brand fuel in a Noble is the detergents that they have in them - they are much better than the standard they stick in normal fuel.

However, if anyone's butt dyno can measure 25bhp on a 300+ bhp car (as claimed by BPs) then they really should change jobs to be a Crapper, Crapper and Crapper Inc. loo seat tester....

So am i wrong to fill up with 98 then? I had just presumed that the engine management had been set up for 98. If 95 is fine thats what i will start using. Dont see the point in 98 if the ECU wont detect it

It's probably psychological (sp?), similar to a placebo. You think it will make your car quicker, so you think that it is quicker.

I have a friend who says his car feels faster after filling up with petrol, even though it's 35 litres heavier.

And will whole-heartedly admit that my car feels nicer to drive after giving it a wash and checking the fluids .

The higher the octaine the less lickely the car is to knock, therefore you can advance the timing a bit and it will run cooler.

I always thought cars are faster if you wash them.

Don't forget the colour makes a difference too, non metallic colours are lighter as there is wot is no metal in them
