Petrol smell and handbrake prob!!!

I have a smell of petrol inside the car when its been parked for a while. It dosen't really matter how much fuel or how long the car has been sitting for.
Also, the handbrake travel seems excesive. Does anyone no (as I haven't rally looked apart from by the rear callipers), where the handbrake cable adjusts.

Behind the passenger seat and behind a pannel in the center tunnel there is the adjustment for the handbrake.

I'm doing mine this weekend. I tried before but was awkward so this time I'm taking out the seat.

They all smell of petrol. My garage reeks of the stuff. You can tighten the nut thing up on the cap, but I found it did not make much difference, and when I say much, I mean no difference at all. But, if you want to give it a go then adjust the nut on teh underside of the petrol cap so that when you remove the cap the litte lever thing is quite tight. Don't do what I did and loosedn the nut; then what happens is that you put the cap back on and when you try and remove it the lever spins round and you can't get the cap out. I had to unscrew the jubliee clip from the hose so I could get the petrol cap back off.

With Snuffy on this one, mine fills the garage within hours which is annoying with an attached garage. There's no leaks so god knows where the smell comes from, it seems they all do it.
I'm taking the handbrake apart this weekend to improve it, tightening the cable didn't make as much difference as I hoped so I'm going to clean / adjust in the wheels.

To adjust the handbrake you first should BACK OFF the adjuster in the central tunnel behind the handbrake lever. This is accessed by moving the passenger seat forward and removing a small panel on the left side of the tunnel inside the car. DO NOT just tighten this adjuster up to take up any play/reduction in hand brake efficiency
Next jack the car up and remove the wheels (you can do it through the wheels but easier to remove them). The adjuster is acessed through the hole in the drum (between two of the wheel studs) and is turned with a flat blade (screw driver). It looks like a 'ribbed' wheel and you really need a torch to see it and get the idea of how to move it the first time you try it. Turn the adjuster until the hub/wheel drags then back of a touch. Do the same the other side then tighten the cable adjuster inside the car until the action seems sensible (about 5 clicks for a good pull). It is easier than it sounds!

I've had mine a month now , and since then the house smells like a refinery. . I've tried the cap trick which only works if you were getting no seal before (I.E you could rotate the cap with the lever down)
Mole Valley have had a look , and are due to replace the breather pipe that has perished. If that doesn't work fitting a carbon canister filter on the breather has been suggested.
Has anyone tried it ?

I've read this complaint time and time again and remain amazed that there does not seeem to be a definitive answer.Other cars don't stink like this so what is the difference in the venting / fuel cap/etc than other cars?
It is actually easier than rocket science because their fuels have no smell(I think)

One difference the Noble has to most other cars is that it has it's petrol tank in the engine bay, and cooks the petrol in it. The tank really does get quite hot. That's going to cause a good deal of petrol to vent off, and for some time too.

I've had my 3R 3.5 years and have never had any problems with fuel vapours

Mine also smells of petrol. I checked it all when doing the pump and there was no leaks.

I always thought it was the pipe that runs off the filler neck and comes out the bottom of the car next to the tank.

I found that pipe the other week after returning to my car after filling it up. That is to say, filling it up a bit too much !

Has anyone solved this yet?

Do you know if the vent pipe from the filler neck to atmosphere has any valves etc. fitted?

I noticed on Noble Parts the following:

non-return valve for fuel overflow (cause of petrol smell in cabin & garage according to some)
Ford part No 89f8-9a 153-ab 8z02a listed under Ford Zetec Escort 150 PS
F.C.

I have checked with Ford and the valve is £25. It this an additional valve or one that may have gone faulty, if it is original where is it located?

Any help appreciated as the garage is integral and the smell is not good.

Checked my 2.5 this afternoon in the garage as i've never had any petrol smell at all, the pipe on my the somes off the filler neck and down out the floor does have a little black valve thing in line, so maybe it does work??

Is the valve visible or is it tucked away by the fuel pump etc?

Double check there's not a small leak in the casing of the fuel filter. Had that on mine.
