Pulling a bit....

On the drive home from Sunday's Northants run I noticed that the M400 is pulling to the right all the time - doesn't matter which road or the camber.
The factory say that it needs to be set up with a string box and only a dealer can do it? Surely this can't be the case?
I'm 150 miles away from the nearest dealer. Any advice welcome guys please?
Oh and I don't know what a 'string box' is? Except my mum used to have a 'box with some string in' but i doubt that's it, is it?

String box is the old fashioned way of doing the laser wheel alignment.
Some say its more exact, oythers just say that as they don't have/can't afford the laser machine!!
They basically tie a piece of string around the car from each wheel centre and make it square by adjusting the wheels. Its to check their toe in and camber and alignment.
Gets done on an MOT and is prob all that needs doing Carl. Give your local ferrari, porcshe, etc specialist a call. They'll be able to do it for you.

stringing is , as mentioned above , an old way of checking that your car isnt crabbing down the road . This is done , as said before by wrapping string round the wheels and checking the gao is equal at the rear . The car will still need the toe in setting at the rear and the front to make sure that these are ok , and its usually worth having a last check with the string / laser to ensure its still ok after the toe adjustment !
surely any decent specialist with lazer or infa red 4 wheel alignment facility can set the car up if you give them the geometry settings.
i have been amazed recently reading that places charge 250 plus quid to set cars up.
i have a place near me a bog standard tyre and suspension place which has 4 wheel alignment capability and charges 50 euro to set a car up to whatever the customer wants it set up to with regards to camber, caster and toe.
surely there are places like this in the uk?

I know I'm gonna get my arsed kicked for this , but I would start with the simple things ...are the tyre pressures spot on side to side ? ...are the tyres all matched ?...has the problem developed , or has it been there since you picked it up ? ..... I suppose the problem of laser wheel alignment equipment is not finding the kit , it's finding somebody good who knows what he's doing with the adjustments ?...

No arse kicking from me. Tyres are obviously the first place to start.As to Geo Plans set my car up with string and it runs true at all speeds. Lasers who needs em!

You're right m8. I have no doubt that the guys at Dovehouse would be more than happy to sort if for me. But it's like I said at the beginning of the post and it applies to Dovehouse. i suppose a 4 wheel check will confirm all is within tolerance because if castor or camber are wrong it must mean something is worn / broken.
