Is this intermittent, or does it happen every time you start the car?

Is it when the car is started from cold, warm or both?

What colour is the smoke?

Not necisarily a problem if it's only a small puff - turbo's do this - next time you see a 911 turbo start - whatch it - they do a little puff as well...

I reckon your turbo seals or valve seals are on the way out

more likely to be the turbo's

is it a 3.0 or 2.5 ?

Hi Kev,

I'm just through in Edinburgh and have a really good guy who works on mine, hes done loads of upgrades and sorted countless things on my 2.5 too, so if you have any problems or just want him to take a look, give me a shout.

puff ? that's an understatement !!!! If I left my old 911 in the Garage for more than a couple of days, it used to fill the garage with smoke when I started it ! Ah, those were the days !

My M12 normally puffs a bit when it's not been started in a while, but it's always done that. I'd only get worried if it's like that all the time !

A good rule of thumb is to make sure you give the car plenty of time to normalize before you park it up, drive the last 5 miles keeping the revs bellow 3K, then let the engine idle a bit before you switch it off.
When you start it from cold, keep the revs under 3K until the temp comes up. If you've not got an oil temp gauge then I'd get one, as you can see that an engine with 90 degrees on the temp gauge does not mean that the oil is up to temp. So take it easy for a few miles.

Cheers,

The smoke from a 911 is not from the turbo itself though.

No...it's coming from the exhaust pipe tongue out

have a look at this Kv3, -

lots of info on different types of exhaust smoke

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_can_cause_white_smo...

'Blue smoke is primarily from internal engine wear. If it's constant when the engine is on, then the rings etc are worn and need to be replaced. If it only is blue when the engine is cold or first started, the rings are worn but not gone completely. You get the oil seeping during the night and it burns off when the car is started in the morning.'

Don't give up mate. The little niggles are a pain. Worth the hassle when it's working fine though. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

There is definitely no need at all to drive it gently for 5 miles without getting the turbo on boost.

Give it 30 seconds or so with little load on it and that will be absolutely fine.

Obviously not 30 seconds after being at top speed on the motorway for a few hours though haha

You DO need to keep the revs down when the engine is cold, not just when the gauge shows a hot engine (which it does quite quickly). It isn't a good idea to drive it hard with cold oil, this does lead to premature engine/turbo wear. Five miles is a good benchmark figure if you don't have a oil temp gauge.
Smoke on startup sounds like a turbo seal, it's probably leaking very slightly, not noticable on general running but dribbles out when you turn off and the residual pressure seeps into the downpipe.
Best way to check is run the engine so next time it will smoke and take off the downpipes and check for oil at the rear of the turbos.

the test for faulty turbo seals is

take it for a drive and give it some beans
let it idle for 5 mins
give it a hard rev

if it smokes - its generally the turbo seals

if it doesn't - get a compression check done

does the car use much oil ?
