5 speed

Am I right in believing that the 5 speed gearbox is the MTX-75 type as fitted to

Escort Mk 5/6 130ps
Escort Mk 5/6 RS200
Mondeo
Focus 1.8D/2.0D/RS

also is this just a standard box or was anything changed?

You are right, the 2.5 had the MTX-75 'box. As to whether it was modified internally, I'll have to pass on that one.

Do you know if the MTX-75 was fitted to GTO-3?

I ask this as mine is starting to get a little noisy and as a new MTX box is easy to get hold of, I am simply considering just changing it?

any help would be most welcome!

If you are going to change it then get the new one made stronger (Shot peen I think is the term) 1st.

If you have 5 gears it's the 75.
Gearboxman can strengthen them, but seeing as a 75 is so cheap and the US guys came up with the quick way changing them, you could almost treat them as a consumable !
