temp problem

hi. not had any luck with this car and had decided to trade it in. finished work today got in car went to take it to the dealers and noticed the temp gauge well over 100dg ( the car obviously didnt want to go) got it back home and let it cool down completely started it and watched temp guage and fans to seee if they kicked in . they didnt kick in and the needle kept on rising, checked all fuses and all o.k.

any ideas ?

Yes, I have had a similar proble, but not both fans.
The fans are powered through two relays in the passenger footwell. One of these relays failed on my car and that was enough to allow the engine to get too hot in trafic.
Check these relays. Just swap one with a good relay to see if energises.

Have you checked the temp sender unit, the one that tells the fans to start when temp rises.
Easy way to check is to short it out, if fans start, there's your problem, if not

If its a 2.5 then the fan switch unit is at the front by the horns on the passenger side. I went through 5 of these switches and allways had with me a short bit of cable that Plans made up to short the switch out if it failed. If its a 2.5 with MBE then I would have thought they would have got the ECU to control the fans.

I have an after market ECU and I wired in my own realy to the ECU so it can switch the fans on. No more broken fan switches .

On another note my gauge has started to read not as per the temp of the car and I want to change the sender switch. Can't seem to find the correct one from motor stockist. the Mondeo one they found has two prongs and mine has a spade terminal. Any ideas what I need?

The teminals on my temp switch had corroded to hell when my fans first failed to come on, and i now have to scrape them clean regularly.

Is your 2.5 running MBE and the fan switch at the front?

Sorry to hear that. Have they just all been niggly problems or anything major? It's even worse when you think you'll finally be rid of the problem when you get something else stopping you offloading the car. Had the same with my Fiat (slightly different scale of importance of course) - taking it to the dealer to part exchange and engine warning light comes on. Great.... Hope you sort it all out soon.
