Removed my front turbo on the M400 last night to replace the studs and gasket on downpipe and the bd is cracked inside the exhaust housing, the crack is visible on the manifold side and on the exhaust side next to the wastegate, a tiny bit of play on the spindle so i assume a rebuild, then remove the rear one and its the same, although the cracks are worse and are visible on the outside of the housing, again has a tiny bit of play on the spindle.

Its a bit late by the looks of things but got my fuel pump upgraded to the bosche 044, (noisey fker)

What are my options guys? i assume both exhaust sides of the turbo's need replaced and a rebuild while im at it. Or would i be cheaper just buying new/refurbished.

Has anyone replaced the turbo's with upgraded items or is this not advisable with the standard engine internals?

Thanks again

Graham

I know that JNM replace the T25's with T28's as part of their later upgrade stages but I'm not entirely sure how wise that is if the lower stage upgrade has not been done. They may be an option though.

cracked exhaust housings is very very common

the heat cycles in them cause the cracks

its nothing to worry about - the housings will not leak

if you fitted new housings they will probably only crack again

probably 50% of all turbo's i have ever looked at have cracks in them

Have seen these a few times while at engine advantages (next door) and always thought i would try them. Might get the turbo of the rover and give them a try. wink

I have known Mick Ireland for many years and he has rebuilt my turbo's in the past.
They have always been reliable but would stress that I have always insisted on new parts rather than reworked / refurbed parts which tho cost a bit more can work out less hassle in the long run, obviously just my opinion though.

Give me the exact model number (or part number) for the Turbo and I'll see what we have on file.

Can I ask (possibly) a daft (kind of) related question?

I have a slight oil leak at the front turbo area and I've had the hoses off, chopped off any dodgy looking ends and put them back on. The hoses don't have any more obvious signs of leakage themselves but I'm still getting a small drip of oil collecting at the bottom of the return hose just before it connects to the sump and oil has run down the entire length of the hose.

If I have a turbo leaking oil (I suspect I do) would that manifest itself internally, or do they physically leak out onto hoses and the surrounding area, or both? It's slightly OT so apologies, but I'm wondering if my planned turbo upgrade due next April might have to be brought forward a little.

There is a little O ring seal on the turbo drain, most of them leak, i couldnt get a new one so used rtv, its a pig to get off youll need an allen key on a socket and a long extention.

After some thought iv decided to just put the turbo's back in and carry on with them until i notice some physical difference, the car still drove fine and seems good otherwise, warranty runs out in march so i'll take them off again nearer the time and see how they look.

Graham, I had both of my turbo's refurbished by turbo technics about 3 months ago for the same reason.

I also have a warrenty and the company refused to pay out blaming it on the fact that the car hadn't been warmed up and cooled down properly (which is a load of rubbish).

I cant remember the cost but they were very helpful, with a quick turn around and theres always the option to uprate them too smile

Do they do a 'swap yours with an already refurbished one' for quicker turnaround, and is the refurbishment warrantied? I think with mine smoking a little it might be worth getting the front one done at least.

P.S. Out of interest, who was your warranty company that refused to pay (if that's allowed smile)?

Just found these - I think Obes has used them in the past:
