I changed the fuel filter last weekend and it was pretty dirty - looked like it should've been changed a while ago really. Anyway, my (excessively) skoky exhaust that has made me think I may have HG failure seems to have calmed down considerably when I ran it this morning. It was thick and acrid before, but today it was light and dissipated much more quickly. Is it possible a partially bocked fuel filter can cause smoking?

Nope, possible turbo?I once had a smell from under the car which I knew was a slight leak from the gearbox onto the hot exhausts. I'd had it for a while but it seemed minor enough. On the way down the motorway I was pleased to note the smell had gone. The box failed a while later and the AA took me home.

Yes, I checked the breather system while doing the turbo last month and although sludgy, nothing was blocked. I think I've found the cause. I drove the car on Saturday and watched it beginning to smoke straight away again after a very short round-the-block warm-up. A black car came up behind me and the 'white' smoke suddenly looked slightly blue against it, so oil is burning by the looks of things. Front turbo is new and rear turbo does not seem to be leaking, so I'm thinking 's
t, it must be the engine...'. Got it home and then noticed the new front turbo has a ring of oil around the intercooler hose, I take it off and find a fairly big blob of oil now staining the drive. Looks like the new/refurbed turbo is leaking far worse than my old one 
. Ah well, it's only the third time I'll have taken it off in six weeks...
It seems that while idling, the oil dropped into the exhaust previously was being burned off gradually and was finally gone, only to drive the car again and straight away the turbo drops a load of oil back in again. Followed all the pre-oiling instructions to stop these kinds of issues, but this has been a nightmare. Almost tempted to post the full story on the private web site as there are a few more details I probably couldn't get away with posting on here.
