Just wondered if anyone knows what the score is with tuning via a computer. When my car was last at Mole Valley, they plugged in the laptop and did the necessary. However, I would like to take the car to my local mechanic, who incidently, bought a 3R having driven my 2.5. We are both unsure whether dedicated equipment is necessary. Any info would be welcome as he is investing in new equipment in April.

The software for the MBE ecu is available on Nobleparts but the password to do mapping is not available and the map is locked, but viewing and testing relays, sensors etc and datalogging is available with an interface lead which must be used which is also available on the same thread.

Thanks for the info. Does that mean that if I wanted to run the car as per the factory settings, the equipment you mention would do the job? I assume different plugs and cables etc for 3r to 2.5?

If you want to use it as a diagnostic tool then yes it should be what you need, if you can be more specific then I might be able to advise a bit more. The 2.5 I,m not sure as to what software is available if at all .

I suppose what I'm really getting at is my 2.5 has 'on and off' days like all cars I've previously owned. At the moment it doesn't tick over too well in that occassionally the revs dip to virtually zero then bounce up a little. It hasn't actually stalled yet, but I'm quick to give the gas a blip. It normally happens as I hear a click from the engine bay. It is not the fans switching on or the AC, but something sucks the power out momentarily. Also, and it could be my imagination, the car doasn't feel so quick at the moment. So I'm thinking, put some new plugs in and run a diagnostic to see if the ECU is set as per factory i.e all cylinders getting equal fuel etc. I believe that the ECU 'learns' to adjust things. Mole Valley plugged a laptop in a couple of years back and re set the ECU to factory spec as mine had learnt to adjuct to a leaking manifold.
Cheers, Mr Paranoid?

Not sure if it works for the 'older' ECUs, but on 3Rs and M400s if you disconnect the battery (or remove main fuse) the ECU will reset to the default MAP (ie disregard any of the 'learnt' stuff). Might be worth a try.

If you have a 2.5, then what ECU have you got. Is it the MBE or the original Magnetic Marelli, if the latter then doing anything to it is probably out of the question.

Its definately the upgraded ECU. At the end of the day I could take it to Mole valley as my nearest dealer and get a service, but it would be nice to keep it in the village I live in, especially as the local mechanic bought a 3R. If the new equipment he is buying would do the job it would be great. I'd better ask him what he is buying and then find out if the Noble software is compatible.

Great, so should i need to change the battery or the main fuse pops then i'll loose the re-mapped settings and it'll need to go 600+ miles round trip and pay to be re-mapped again?

You wont loose the map that's programmed in, all you will loose is the learn part of the map.
