Got the turbo fitted for the 3rd time this weekend. Found the refurbished unit I fitted last time round was chucking oil into the exhaust far quicker than my old original one, hence continued smoking - seals had failed within 10-20 miles of use. So the next attempt is finally on but the car still smokes - it's almost certainly not condensation and appears to be the same type that caused me concern last time round.

Oil breather system appears to be fine, turbo oil drain is clear, using more coolant than I'd like but have a feeling I have a leak at the front end, car idles normally, no nasty sounds, temps are fine.

How long would you expect the residual oil from the last unit to be burned up in the exhaust?
Probably run now for 40 minutes in two sessions. Should I just take it for a blast or am I right to be pessimistic?

Had my front turbo replaced last year after the same happened - oil leaking through the seals onto the exhaust and serious smoke coming from the back especially when cold. Once the seals had warmed up a bit the smoking stopped but I still took her in. After she came back it took a couple of Sunday morning blasts (2 or 3 hours a go) to get rid of the residual oil and for the smoking to subside. After that it was fine.

also make sure you go for a good drive to burn off all the old oil that may be in exhaust!!!

If you've dumped lots of oil into the exhaust I would check the cat

I double-checked with the turbo company and they mentioned I shouldn't need one. As far as I'm aware the turbo set up is as it was on the old unit (same bearing type) but with double seals on it, and the connectors/oil feed hose are all the same bits I had previously.

Would this go on at the engine or turbo fitting, or is it built into the hose itself?

Exactly my initial symptoms. Wish I'd waited till April and done a full replacement with T28's now. I reckon the old one would have lived until then, espeically given my lack of chance to drive it over the last two or three months. Hindsight eh....?

Might be worth disconnecting the silencer to see if I can drain any out. A guy here at work also mentioned the same - he said it took a week of driving 50+ miles each way a day for his to stop after a refurb.

I'm worried I'm missing something obvious though. silly

you have to make sure the turbo is prelubricated before you start the engine

i suspect this is why your turbo's failed ?

Hopefully not. I got a sheet of instructions and followed them to the letter smile.

Give Universal Turbos a call on 01425 656900 & speak with Grahame Page, he knows of the problem & can offer a cure, also if you do send the turbo in make sure it has the oil feed union on & he will check the restrictor for you

I double-checked the turbo yesterday and it looks like it's not leaking. So far it appears the only explaination is that it's the residual oil in the exhaust.

I know I'm a bit of a pansy but I'm a bit hesitant to thrash the car to burn off oil when it might be due to a leak of some kind. And I'm a bit paranoid because of the two previous efforts (the long story's on Nobleparts) - not trusting anything at this point.

Think I'm going to have to stop worrying and be a brave soldier smile.

Give it a good thrashing, if theres anything wrong with it you'll find out soon enough, it's there to be enjoyed at the end of the day.

I think it's time I remembered that. Last two months+ have been a bit dull without it I must admit.

I give my car abuse, nothing ever goes bang, just a couple of minor things have shown weakness and have been replaced, smile

Well I tried it, and it went bang again inside 10 miles. Breather system is clear, oil return is clear, confirmed the oil feed does not need a restrictor and it did the same.

Off to the garage, maybe to get a couple of T28s like I'd planned originally.
It's not the money so much (well it is a bit hehe), it's more that I have to admit defeat.

Can't f***ing believe it cry

If its complicated or drawn out, call me at work tomorrow and I'll talk it through with you and see if we can narrow down what might be going wrong? I've E.mailed you my phone number.

Who has confirmed this ? the turbos do require a restrictor in the oil feed line, this was found to be a problem during development & the restrictor cured the leakage problem so therefore it needs to be retained, also there are recently discovered modifications required to the turbo to further overcome the leakage problem, call universal turbos on 01425 656900 & speak with Grahame Page who will discuss these points.
