Fuel smell in cabin !!

I have a 2002 M12. If I open the window when driving it seems to pull a vacum through the gear linkage tunnel and I get a small amount of fumes into the cabin.

The way I noticed it was the gear gaitor filled like a balloon and then started leaking into the cabin, however, as soon as I closed the windown the air within the gaitor disappeared and no more fumes were noticeable?????

i have the same model and did have the same problem. It disappeared when the leaky exhaust manifolds were fixed. I never knew why, it may be a coincidence but have you any exhaust problems?

I have the tunnel mod and it does exactly the same. I also thought it was fuel to start with but it turned out to be the front turbo leaking oil and burning. Only happened on decelleration for me as the tunnel mod was (I'm assuming) blowing air merrily through when accelearating/crusing to stop the fumes getting into the cabin.

Did have a problem with smoking turbo's but that is now fixed! Come to think of it, the smell is greatly reduced but I am still getting the "balloon" effect - think the tunnel mod is in order!

Tunnel mod, also check your fuel filter and assoc' tubing for weeps, in particular the piece between the pump and filter.

There's an entry in the Wiki on Fuel smell. Worth a check from a safety point of view as mine lost a seal on the fuel filter and leaked.
