A nice simple one this time...

On my car's engine the belt which is on the drivers side is squealing a bit at low revs/idle, whats the best way to stop this...

On a more gown-up note, is there an obvious tensioner? Is the belt damp from rain etc?

Alternator belt - you can try spraying it, but it's seldom a long term fix. Best to remove belt; clean pulleys with brake cleaner and brush and put on a new belt. Before taking off the old belt make sure that the tensioner mechanism is sitting in the middle of it's full travel (ie it can take up the slack under heat and acceleration). Do this with a 3/8 inch drive. If that's OK stick with normal size belt (6 ribx1700mm)- if you find that the belt is on the end-stop of the tensioner (ie it has no way to take up and slack) then go for a slightly smaller belt (6x1693mm - cheap and easy option) or put some shims behind the alternator (generally more painful option).

It only seems to do it once the engine gets hot (and is dry), will try get some of this belt lubricant and see if that'll last till service time.

Silcon spray always works for me: I apply it every few months as part of general maintenance whether noisy or not.

My belt sometimes squeals after/ during heavy rain OR a wash. Stops after 15 minutes or so. Thought of putting a spray on it myself. Don't understand the silicon spray though, it my game we use silicon spray as a lubricant. Will it not make the belt slip?

if you apply the silicon spray while the engine is running/belt is squealing you will know when its has done the job - doesnt need much

tried the silicone spray thing on my cossie but didnt work.then tried valve lapping paste just a couple of small blobs on the belt and instantly squeak free

At fords they use a small amount of grease on belt and pulleys which does work and lasts quite well !!

Thought the same myself when I asked the same question, only it was the water pump belt. We use silicone grease spray and silicone spray. Used a bit of both (just in case) worked a treat
