Could someone tell me what antifreeze i need in my system (3R)? I have bought some that is red coloured, the system has leaked so much that i can't see what colour used to be in it, possibly it may have been green. Does it make any difference?

If you mix the wrong types it can apparently coagulate inside the coolant system, which wouldn't be good.

The recommended coolant is Shell Premium, which is a lovely greeny-blue colour and is an Ethylene Glycol based coolant (I think).

Mixing coolant types can be disastrous as the two most common types react to form a jelly! Pretty sure you should NOT use the red one...

If you're not sure what was in there before it's probably worth flushing the system and doing a complete refill. Recommended ratio is 1 part coolant, 1 part (distilled / deionized) water.

At least then you'll know exactly what went in and that it has the right characteristics - coolant is not just "antifreeze", it also raises the boiling point as well so you have a wider range of safe operational temperature.

I just spent two days playing whack-a-mole with small coolant leaks and refilling / unloading the coolant... but all sorted now (fingers crossed).

Thats it Dave, trouble is the coolant is leaking faster than ever at present. Having to put about 2/3rds ltr of water in every time I take the car out. Greeny-blue must be right as there is some staining to the expansion tank. The car is off to Urban racing soon to have work done so trying to make my rad last without doing any damage (eye to the temp gauge ever few mins!!!) Thanks for the help though. P.S Is it essential to use de-ionized water??? Paul

It's not essential but still well worth doing I think. A lot of tap water has quite high mineral content which can scale up your cooling system (just like a kettle) over time, and de-ionized water will be much less likely to cause rust too.

Halfords do 5-litres for a few quid -

... and you can use the left-overs to top up your lava lamps smile

when i 1st bought my car i too had water everywhere.imho i think from the factory they used sub standard hosing and standard type horrid jubilee clips.if you look at the clips you can see where they overlap at the worm screw there is a gap that the clip is struggling to overcome.at work we put many makes of clips under constant pressure tests and the ones used on the noble had to be over tightened but then in time still leaked.the hosing problem has been discussed on here many times and must be replaced by a silicone based 3ply hose with clips to match

Cheers Artie, have been looking for the source of the leak, to no avail. It seems the floor pan under the front end will have to come off, keep putting it off as it looks a censored of a job!!. My rubbers look like breaded black elbows connected by nasty looking ally pipe. Can’t really get a good look at the jubilee clips. The leak seems to stem from the right hand side (looking from rear to front) of the rad, where the pipes connect. Something tells me I’m going to have to graze my knuckles to get to the bottom of this one!!! smash = headache = smash = cry

lots of us have taken the floor of completely to reveal in some cases rotten chassis rails.its a great chance to replace the coolant hoses and as a few replace the multitude of rivets with self tappers
