Moving Air Filters
Discussion
Hi all,
If all goes to plan I will be picking up my new toy on Saturday (2003 Portofino Blue 3R) and can't wait
Will be my second Noble after owning a 2.5 which I sold a couple of years ago.
Starting to plan what I'm going to do to it and one of the first jobs is getting the air filters moved back to their rightful position behind your ears.
Has anyone done the move themselves or have any experience of doing this? I know a bunch of people either got the factory to do this or got their garage to move them.
Cheers.....Simon.

Before I fitted the hard-pipe kit I cut and moved the front turbo's flexi pipe and bent a short piece of alloy i found in my garage, bolted it to the underside of the fuel cap as so the filter sits as close to the side vent as possible and screwed the filter onto it. Moving this one filter alone made it sound great!
As I use my car most days (and have a forge BOV now) I do prefer the filter back in the airbox with the hard-pipes on.

i,m also interested in doing this mod ...problem is i don,t know WHY you do it !!!
Why on earth would you want to do a mod that you don't know what it does.bernhund said:
Thought there was some chat about this not so long ago and moving them would lose some performance? Something to do with cooler air etc. Or did I mis understand?
Technicaly you are probably correct, as seen in a wind tunnel no air whatsoever enters the engine bay via the holes at the front of the clam, whereas a large amount of cool air folds over the buttresses and into the position in front of the intercooler. There is an argument that by having the filters at the back you are reducing the efficiency of the i/c. But some people like the noise.
On my 3R, I had them put in the classic position. Although it was great from a novelty factor, with a Bov as well it was borderline overkill. The first thing the guy who bought it did was to put them back in the normal 3R position. To my ears you also seemed to lose the howl of the engine at 3000rpm upwards which was a shame. If you've had the car a while and just fancy a change it's an easy cheap thing to do.........although I never seem to find anything cheap and easy............

I wouldn't have though it would be a problem if travelling above say 50 anyway, I'd rather that than suck potentially (very) hot air in from directly above the engine...
