Hello All

Could do with a bit of advice please if anyone has made a claim via a Kerridges warranty, particularly if it was for a turbo.

My garrage (Newtown Motors) has advised that my turbo has "gone". I assumed this would simply be covered by the Kerridges warranty. Now I know there are warranties and warranties but I did check out what you guys were saying about the ones from Kerridges before I bought one, and all I could find were positive comments and really a must have purchase.
The garage is now saying that the warranty companny have said that because the turbo is not literally in bits they would likely argue that it isn't "broken" its probably "worn", therefore "probably not covered", as they are looking for mechanical failure?
To me, very simply, car not running properly, take it to the garage, garage says its the turbo, my mind thinks ah thats what's not working ie broken!
Has anyone had any simlar experiences, or even gone thorugh this when trying to claim for a turbo?
Help, I cant afford it!

Thanks

How many miles have you done?

Assuming negligble mileage, and as long as the turbo has been fed clean oil and not ingested any foreign objects I cant see how the warranty company can argue it is worn. Service life on these is 100k plus.

Been serviced at the same garage evry time( a Noble Dealer) and Mole Valley before I bought it.
I know what you mean, thats how I see it

Whilst technically correct, I'll think you'll find that regardless of the supposed life of a component, if it looks worn to a warranty company, it's worn...end.

There's lots of anecdotal evidence of turbos going in less miles than this so I don't think you'll get far sadly. Warranty companies have been tightening up lately as well.

Just as a matter of interest, what does a replacement turbo cost for the GTO-3?

It's interesting that a warranty claim can simply be rejected like this. I took one well known company to Court. They settled the day before the hearing as 'a gesture of goodwill'.

Yes, i.e. they didn't actually say your claim was valid so neatly side stepping setting a precedent. It's worth a go, if you can afford to loose.

small claims, so no issues. They get a lot of bad press if they lose and I made sure they knew I would do exactly that.

Stick the turbo back on and drive it till the compressor wheel hits the casting, then it will be well and truly broken. If the bearing is going it shouldn't take too long.

Only problem is now they know about it they wouldn't cover it anyway. I believe there are a few people who have at least part costs covered on the turbos by Autoprotect who used to do the kerridges warranty. I would personally go the small claims court route as well.

what symptoms does the car have ?

is it smoking ?
lost power ?

if you do as adrian say drive it till the compressor wheel fails - beware if the parts get into the engine, you could kill the engine. If they refuse the claim you could be forking out for a new engine too

i suspect the car has had a bit of a caning over its life and the turbo has worn out, does the car have any modifications ?

Yeah both of those really. Started with like a whisp of smoke coming thorugh just one of the air filters, but it was very intermittent. The next time I used it, it just felt and sounded wrong straight away within less than a mile. Describe it really as running rough and something holding it back. Turned round, parked it up and rang the AA. As soon as I turned it back on for them later, started getting a lot of smoke from exhaust and had it recovered to garage.

What do you mean by having a caning?
I've had it for nearly four years and never tracked it and more or less used it just on the weekends, doing about 6k a year. No modifications other than factory fitted options. I'm assuming a track day would be caning it more than I could on the roads, isn't it?
I have never put my foot down until the car has done between 5& 7 miles and after each journey I have never shut it down until 45-60 seconds has passed. I count it on my stereo as a cd is playing ( no comments needed about having a stereo on in a Noble thanks!)-- it does everyones head in-- i am absolutely anal about it !!

What I don't get is why they go so early on these cars. If you take one of the steel shafted CT26 Turbos on the MR2 (the ceramic Ct20bs do break) they seem to last at least twice as long. They also run getting on for twice as much boost each, and I believe use the same basic technology.
At least they are much easier to change than on the MR2, that is a complete mare.
Rob.

eek

is the replacement turbo coated in gold, or have the stealer put their rates up since making a hash of my car!?!

If you don't get anywhere with the warranty company I'd advise giving JetStream a call about fixing it.
