Temp Gauge -- Major Flickers !

Had issue on track day a while ago, after 15mins or so temp gauge flicked right from 95 ish to off the scale and car lost power. Seems this is designed to happen BUT yesterday same happened in more normal road driving, do i assume car is getting too hot? gauge sits at 90 most of time them..... straight off the scale no gradual rise?

Any help would be most welcome, rad water level looks fine and doesnt use any water.

Also need to get car serviced in somerset area, any suggestions about good place to use?

If the car is not a 2.5, the temp gauge in the car is controlled by the ECU (i.e., it is not connected directly to the coolant temperature sensor) so your problem could be the result of a bad connection or other fault at the ECU. This is especially likely if you are not seeing any other obvious indication of engine overheating or coolant loss.

Iys a 3r so seems ecu may be issue, any ideas about how/where to get this checked out...

If ECU reads high temp from sensor, it cuts power and sends gauge needle to the right.

So, if both these events are happening, maybe faulty sensor?

ok guess i'm gonna need to find someone to check the ecu/ temp sensor etc out or is it worth just replacing the sensor to start with?

Get the free software on Noble parts and purchase/make a lead and then you can check the sensors yourself in real time.

Lee wanted the gauge to over read when the ecu read the car was hot

it means the driver is more likely to back off and less risk of a meltdown

check your fans are coming on ok

Yup. I nearly pooped myself when it happened to me.

Complete loss of coolant due to a large leak, so for me it was detecting an overheat (or potential one) correctly. I'd just come off the M4 and was sitting at some lights (still miles from home) but managed to coast downhill to a friendly Holiday Inn at the junction to supply me with water at two in the morning.

The drastic needle movement made me notice it straight away and probably saved my engine.
