squeaky brakes

After changing my front pads some time ago they started to squeak. while having my wheels off for painting i decided to blow the disks thinking this would help as they were full of dust. Well it didnt help at all so i removed the wheels and took the pads off to give them a little grease (on the rear of the pad). When doing this i think i have found the fault. The pads dont line up with the disks exactly and the whole pad is not being worn away. So as my pads are wearing there is a lip being formed on the pad which is (i think) rubbing on the edge of the disk and making the noise. This squeak is now sooooo painfully loud and embarrassing. Can i just grind this bit of pad away????? Has anyone else had this prblem as i puchased the pads from a place listed on noble parts???????
How wide is the lip on the pad? Is it on the inner edge of the pad or the outer? Is there a lip on the rotor on the opposite edge? Front or rear?
The front pads are taller than the rear by around a half cm or so - if the problem is on a rear brake, make sure that you aren't using a front pad on it. If the pad and rotor are offset and there are lips on the opposite edges (i.e. pad has a lip on the outside, but rotor has a lip on the inside or vice-versa), you may need to have the caliper adjusted so that the surfaces match. If the pad is just wider than the surface of the rotor, you can grind off the lip on the pad, but it will eventually come back as the pad wears. A file should work fine - just be careful not to breath the dust.
Chamfering the leading and trailing edges of the pad will help eliminate the squeal. Also, be sure that the pad guides (top and bottom in the caliper) are clean, along with the pins that hold the pads in place, and the anti-rattle spring. Make sure the spring is clean, and installed the right way around. Use a little high-temp brake grease on all sliding surfaces (pad guides, pins, spring).
Some compounds are more prone to squealing than others, especially if you use a compound that isn't suited for your usage. For example, if you use a high-temp track compound on the street, it will squeal like an old truck...

I will have to have another look but i think that the lip is on the inner edge of the pad/disk as if the bottem edge of the pad is below the inner edge of the disk. also in the past ive bought front and rear pads,both were supplied the same dimensions but i had to get the rear pads machined to fit around the rear drum. Jim, what is correct way round for the spring as they can fit either way around? Mine have an `arrow` pierced through them but should this point up/down/direction of wheel rotation etc? I don`t have a squeak problem but I`m curious to know whether the parts are correctly installed.
The arrow should point in the direction of wheel rotation. So, the fronts point up, and the rears point down. If you drive in reverse a lot, use the opposite. Gassing Station | Noble | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
