Crunch time.....

Feeling mighty p**d off at the moment. Beautiful sunny day so out comes the car for an afternoons drive. Two miles down the road following a learner driver we come to some road works - we start going down the single file carraige way when all of a sudden a fire engine comes up to the start of the road works siren blasting in the other direction. So what happens next? The learner stops dead, selects reverse and accelerates backwards onto the front clam shell of my car...with me sat there hand on horn and hemmed in by the cars following me. Scary watching a rear bumper approach the windscreen. No one hurt but the front clam, lights etc wrecked and the weight of the other car has bent some of the sheet metal around the front radiator. I could have wept... no one hurt but what a mess. Now the business starts with the insurers to try and sort out the problem. Does anyone know if the factory keeps clam shells,light covers etc in stock - can`t see mine being repaired - sadly....

I know how you feel, similar happened to me. A woman pulled out of a turning, another car was coming the other way so she reversed back while I was behind her no horn noise stopped her. i got off lightly as it only needed a respray.

Sorry to hear of your accident, but at least you can use the time in the body shop to "touch-up" the rest of the body. Maybe colour code the door handles, very easy job, I think it looks much better.

Thanks guys - and yes Paul it is the `sister` car. It`s looking rather sorry for its self now though. At least the stone chips will be sorted.....

There is a company in Walthamstow that can do amazing things with glassfibre, they spend a lot of time repairing London taxis as well as all other cars, they sorted my rear clam after i broke it at Snett and you really cant see where they have been, and they wernt that expensive, they do lots of insurance work

Things are hopefully moving forward now... The other parties insurers have admitted liability, (I had 2 witnesses including the fire fighters who were `stood down` just after creating the havoc), and they are allowing me to choose the repairer. (By claiming direct with them rather than going through my insurers - who have been informed - I don`t have the hassle of claiming back the excess on the policy). After talking to the local TVR dealer (David Gerald) I`m intending to get `Option 1` in Bromsgrove to do the work (a specialist composite company) - and they`re coming to look at the car on Wednesday pm. (I`m not happy driving it until I`m sure the top off side outlet to the radiator hasn`t been damaged with the weight of a Clio on the clam shell...).
I`ve also checked with Noble and they have a clam shell and all the lighting parts and mesh sets in stock - don`t order any - they`re mine when the repair estimate is accepted! (I can`t see how the clam shell can be repaired as a big chunk is missing around one headlight and it`s cracked across the top surface. As it`s a flexible part rather than a rigid panel I think an attempted repair would potentially be problematic further down the line. Anyway we`ll see what the experts say).

A picture for Mike...



This shows where after the rear bumper had launched itself up the front clam shell the Clio`s rear wheel decided to clamber up as well...Unfortunately grp isn`t that strong. Note the crush damage to the mesh as the top clam shell surface descended...There are then cracks across the top surface and hairline cracks close to all the quarter turn fasteners that hold the shell closed.

compaired to the damage to my rear clam that is a scratch, i'll see if i can find a picture.

Looks very repairable, but if the other party is paying then clearly a new clam is the "as new" option.

I'm sure a few people will want the old clam if you do get a new one!
