Big Clunk!!!!!!

Just been go-karting with my mates down in York. when i arrived you had to drive down some runway track.... and i got carried away, missed the turn into the car park and had to turn around this loop thing. Popped the back end out to do a half doughnut and CLUNK!!! scary noise.

left it till after the race and then did a bit of fact finding. any help would be massively appreciated.


It sounds very mechanical, like a two bits of metal coming together.
It only does it when the clutch is engaged but doesn't seem to be anything to do with actually engaging the clutch.
I did seem to only do it when going round a corner (made me think Diff) but did it a few times on the motorway in a straight line when transitioning between no throttle and throttle.
If i did accelerate it would not do it once i was getting through the gear.
On closer inspection when i arrived at home i can see oil, of some kind, which looks like it has sprayed out of the boot (is this CV boot?) on the drive shaft, just underneath the rear turbo drivers side.
It definately seemed to do it on corners yet i could go round a corner fast with the clutch depressed with no problem.

Diff, CV joint???


any help or direction would be greatly appreciated

This happened to me and it was the diff, it didn't finally go until 10-20 mins later after the initials noise.

hope it's not the diff, is a new Diff an engine/gearbox out job?

Would an engine mount cause such a big mechanical clunck though?


could a CV joint going cause this? there was quite a bit of oil around it, looked fresh as well but that may be coincidental! Is a new CV joint a big job?

Diff can be engine out (very expensive say +3k) OR cut side bar fix box the weld/bolt bar back in (say +2k).

My understanding is CV isn't that bad a job.

same thing happened to be big clunk oil over the cv joints but no drive just grinding when the clutch is disengaged....

Jack up the rear of the car, and see how much play you have in the rear axles by holding the axle and turning the wheel back and forth. By holding various points on the axle, you should be able to get an idea of the condition of the inner and outer CV joints, and compare them between the two axles. You may also be able to tell if any play is in the axle, or in the diff. A second person to move the wheel makes it easier, along with removing the rear clam.

i had a very similar thing happen to me a week into ownership thought it was the worst noise ever. my mechanic thought it was the cv joint however ended up being a bolt had sheered of the handbrake shoes and got caught. it did it, then it stopped 10 mins later did it again. it was only on cornering then started doing it when going straight. was a very sinmple fix in the end and c
ost me less than 100 quid. hope is somthing similar

So does anybody know exactly which Mondeo (year/model) the CV joint is from? Need to get this sorted soon, summers fading!
