Looking to buy a M400
Discussion
OK, going to look at an M400 to buy, and could do with some inside information, anything really obvious that I should know?
Are there any faults that I should be aware of or need to rectify if not already done?
I've only seen the first 2.5 GTO model as there's not many around my way, is the M400 finished better? Although it looked good it seemed very kit ish with lots of screws etc., obviously its handling and speed are the reason for my interest but just how reliable are they, with annual servicing
I'm not looking to race it, just general driving, so any insurance tips would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Loads of info on here if you do a search. M400 most developed but you pay for it, and there's some very well upgraded earlier cars around. Usual stuff of buy with head and gut feeling not heart, look for tip top maintenance , no silly gaps in history etc.Once you've got one, it's a very hard car to replace for the money, I've had two as have many others on here. My M400 has now done 26K and is spot on, budget £1500 to £3 grand P.A for servicing and bits to fully cover yourself. Admiral are stupidly cheap on Nobles at the mo' for insurance ( mine is £259 P.A at 7000 miles per year!) but the proof is the claiming obviously. Are there any faults that I should be aware of or need to rectify if not already done?

Take your time, look at as many as you can ( there's never more than 3/4 available at one time though!) and you'll start to get a feel of what's a good-un. enjoy the hunt.

It is a mine field, alot of the people on these forums have documented spending thousands modifying their cars,if ever one of those comes up for sale you are in luck, but i doubt it is going to happen any time soon as these are the cars that are loved and have been well looked after.
You really need a riend who knows these cars inside to out to view them with you, i.e you might disregard a good car because of a rattling heatshield, when all it needs is a bolt tightening.
If you find a car you like, post on these forums and try to find someone local to the car and pay them to go and have a look at it and test drive it etc..There are "some" serious experts on these forums and it would be 10 times more valuable than any AA inspection.
Dont just look at M400 in my opinion, you can find some some modded earlier models which will be much better than a standard M400.
As above.
They have the usual Noble faults:
- corroding rivets on the floor pan
- failing actuators
- cracking suspension top mounts
- heater control valve failure
- poor exhaust brackets
- leaking radiator
- manifolds failing
- crap stereo
There are probably many others but it wouldn't be a Noble without them though and relatively easy/cheap to fix.
There are some desirable modifications such as uprated radiator and intercooler, aftermarket exhaust system and they are easy to remap to release more power (if required).
From my personal experience if a private sale then I would insist that the car was fully serviced by a Noble dealer prior to purchase. That way you know the basic are covered and you can negotiate on any advisories. If from a dealer then I would want a good inspection of car particularly if not a Noble dealer and check the warrantly wording very carefully as most of the above would not be covered.
Given the limited numbers (only c.75 in the UK I believe) then definitely buy on condition rather than age/mileage.

It is brilliant, all controlled with the right foot

All i can tell you is, it is standard, the M400 come with an uprated fuel pump as standard, but it sounds like the wiring upgrade was done, which is one job done.It will not be running a full power due to weak map and restrictions, from cam timing and exhaust. All depends on how it spent those 11000 miles and whether they are genuine, very easy to unplug the speedo on these cars, the mileage gets stored on the speedo. you need to have a look at it, look for rusty screws on the underpan, try turning one, if they wont turn that tells you the rust has bonded them to the chassis, which would indicate lack of maintenance, it may have had wet use and if it has not had the floor pan taken out and resealed properly half the chassis could be eaten away there also, the floor pans tend to leak as standard, these are general modifications thats Nobles require and ones that do not get this attention suffer for it.
Like i say if you are interested in a car, see if you can tempt with financial reward any of the experts on these forums who are local to the car, to go and check it over for you.
That is what i would do, now i know better than when i bought my 1st one.
When i was looking for my current Noble i spent months searching, travelling the full length of the country sometimes, it probably cost me £500 in petrol plus time, but it was my third so i knew what i was looking for.
Believe it or not but on that 2005 M400 the exhaust is probably already falling apart, mounting brackets will have fractured, so whne you look at something like this, know from go that it needs a new exhaust with flexi joints, floor pan taking off and resealing, the engine underpan must have already been off to do the wiring upgrade so this in 1 plus point, but undoubtedly Noble motorsports will have put the old rusty screws back in.
It will need the intercooler upgrading with I/C box modification, repositioning of air filters, derestricting and remapping also.
I consider all these essential/basic fixes, for the car to perform properly, the standard Intercoolers were too smal they get heat soaked very easily.
Dont want to put you off, they are excellent cars but you need to know the facts.
You could try asking the owner - in this case me - but just to set the record straight I have never unplugged the speedo.
The exhaust bracket that broke has been replaced with a specially fabricated alternative (it is not "falling apart") and as far as I am concerned the car runs pretty much full power as per the original M400 spec (at least according to the rolling road print out I have following work done by JNM, which included a new fuel pump). Some people see performance upgrades as essential, but for my own use and enjoyment of the car I think they are unneccessary for the M400.
As I say, best speak to those who actually know the car (in this case the handful of peolpe who have owned or worked on it) rather than rely on presumptions of someone who has never seen it.

I was advising him what to check for, if you have upgraded the fuel pump to motorsport fair enough, sounds like you have had a remap also, which is also good. The exhaust bracket that broke has been replaced with a specially fabricated alternative (it is not "falling apart") and as far as I am concerned the car runs pretty much full power as per the original M400 spec (at least according to the rolling road print out I have following work done by JNM, which included a new fuel pump). Have you had the floor pan done? do you get wet carpets when driving in the rain? I am playing devils advocate here, the guy came on for advice, and i am advising him that the standard intercooler is insufficient and he will get power loss after a short period of time, i know Noble motorsports well, but i know they advise intercooler upgrade and moving air filters to any Noble.
Like you say dual exhaust and cam timing restrictions are to take full advantage of the cars potential, i would consider them essential upgrades, but many would disagree.
There are cars which have had this work carried out, i provided facts so that he can make an informed decision, i said the exhaust 'could be falling apart' just another thing for him to check if he decides to come and see the car, I am not going to lie and pretend Nobles do not have faults as standard spec, the M400 is an excellent car, yours may well be in excellent condition, thats why i advised him to get it checked over by somebody who knows what to look for and then they can say either "that is a nice car buy it" or "it needs a bit of work"
Again with the speedo, genuine mileage can usually be seen with regards to condition of transmission, interior etc.. only another thing for him to look out for, it also depends how those miles were done, again a test by how the car drives.
I am not saying that you are not a completely honest person and that the car is is not in excellent condition, but you are the seller, so i think he wants impartial advice on what to look out for, and i dont think he will know a good car from a bad one until he views and test drives a few, then maybe he will appreciate that yours is a good one etc..
Read on these forums standard spec Nobles get ripped into big time for all the faults inherent from factory, it didn't stop me from buying one, but at least i knew the faults and fixes beforehand and therefore it was an informed decision.
Like Phil said if he knew the faults before he bought his Noble it would have been nice to have that priveledge, that's what the forums are here for, to provide advice, the advice can be heeded or ignored. Don't take it personally, it is not aimed specifically at your M400, the advice was aimed at all M400's which are factory spec.
V8 steve just had to spend £800 on new exhaust manifolds at 20k miles these standard factory fitted parts do not stand the test of time and crack and fall apart just like the standard exhaust.
Based on what you have said i can say that the car has had approx £700 spent on upgrades, but he may be able to find a 3R which for less money which has had £5000 spent on upgrades, which in my opinion is greater in worth than a factory spec M400.
He mentioned road use, M400 has more track biased suspension, although still very good on the road would probably be excess to requirement and you pay extra for it, but the M400 also has T28 turbos as standard which is a £1500 upgrade by Noble motorsports, these are all things the buyer needs to take into consideration.
No, you said the exhaust is "probably already falling apart" and I think you will find that "he" is actually a "she"
Anyway, if anyone is interested in buying my car then please contact me directly and I will happily share any further information with you. I don't think this forum is the right place for a discussion about an indivdual car that is up for sale.

I'd also guess that most M400 owners who have changed exhaust haven't done it because it was :sarcastic:"falling apart",( 26000miles aged 4 mine isn't) moreso because they'd like a better bracket, bit more power etc. There's also a lot of mods that aren't essential for everyday use(although the fuel pump wiring upgrade is a must have) but those other mods would be a big bonus if you intend to track it, or want ballistic power.FWIW,although more track biased I actually feel the 400 is also a better everyday car(had a 3R also) simply because it's smaller turning circle, bigger footwell, better seats and straighter driving position due to the narrower trans'tunnel. As I wasn't tracking it I changed the Corsa's for p-Zero's and it made it much friendlier for road use.As an aside,it's been more reliable than my wifes Disco 3,CLS etc.
As the owner above said, talk to them and as it was previously a Kerridges car, speak to David/Steve up there and I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you what they know.

I agree that the M400 is more comfortable than the older models for common use, when im not taking mine apart to do upgrades, I use it daily.
other than the exhaust, fuel pump and wiring upgrade + remap theres nothing else really needs touched for road use, if you use it hard on trackdays etc then there are a few others worth doing, ie manifolds, intercooler, pads etc
Any other upgrades such as re-doing the floor are dependant on the cars use and storage, just worth a look at it before you buy.
Repositioning the air filters is daft imho. leave them in the intercooler box, under the clam they will only draw in hot air.
Find the right colour, make sure its been looked after then enjoy it, upgrades/mods are just part of maintenence on these cars and you'll do them when its needed.

Again i was only pointing out things for the buyer to look out for, i do not know the car personally of have ever seen it, so i was just saying these are the things that "could" or "probably" need attention, money spending.
I did say the M400 suspension was good for road use as having much better shocks etc.. if you are saying the M400 is more comfortable than a 3R for road use, then this is another plus point for the buyer.
But come on, be fair, the standard exhaust does not have flexi joints, it reverberates through the cabin and keeps working loose from turbo's, the brackets break even when mended they can break again, thats why they broke in the 1st place, just advising the buyer that ones with exhaust already done will be worth about £2000 more.
I am not slagging off the M400 i love these cars, but the buyer has come for advice, and if "she" buys one and the carpets get soggy 1st time she drives in rain, then if not warned that does not bode well for the advice from these forums, a car which has had this fix is worth about £500 more.
Like i said all Nobles have these inherent problems leaking floor pans etc, they just need fixing, and if the jobs have already been done then that is a plus point for the buyer to take into consideration.
And as for the repositioning of air filters, that has been proven by Noble motorsports on the track to improve IC cooling, they suck up all the air that is meant to be passing through the intercooler to disperse heat. The intercooler is far too small as standard, after 10 minutes of driving hard you get great power loss, again just advising the buyer to watch out for cars that have had these upgrades because it adds about £1000 to the value.
The IC is not boxed in well and not heat shielded, it can get sizzling hot from the exhaust and back turbo, and hot air can flow round when stood in traffic, heat soaking the IC even more.
I think i am being fair here in making the buyer aware of what to look for, which any of the above upgrades vastly improves the driving experience and to that point, a monetary value is added, therefore it is all relative, if you can get a standard M400 for 33k or there is another one similar but with lots of upgrades for 37k, the buyer will be able to make a more informed decision.
You are not telling me Phil and Adrian, upgraded all these things for the fun of it, if you want an M400 to run at M400 power then keeping the compressed air cool, is essential, these were design flaws, thats why i do consider them more as essential upgrades, if something doesnt do the job that it is meant to do, then it needs fixing.
Exhaust- power loss due to coming loose from turbos, resonating through cabin etc.
Intercooler + Box + air filters - to combat power loss
Floor pan reseal - to combat soggy carpets
Wiring loom to fuel pump - to avoid break down
Remap - to take advantage of the above fixes
The fact is, that with the above you also get extra power as a bonus when it comes to remap time, but it it does not make them purely to increase performance, that is just a by product of combatting performance loss and replacing parts like the exhaust that at some point are going to need replacing anyway.
There are many other upgrades, to improve air flow, cooling, valve springs, cam timing,etc...the list is too long, which i did not mention, so i only mentioned the things that the buyer may experience and regard as a problem when driving.
