How about fitting a set of adjustable baffles/bungs like the Spoon and Tanabe systems use., They are just a bolt in unit to dampen the noise.

Just a thought, then you can open her up when you want to. cool

Steve - to get a 107dB static reading I'm guessing you're running the exhaust without the cats in place? The Piper Quiet tips will not get you down from that level to the 98dB required for the likes of Goodwood/Castle Coombe or Donington (RIP). They may be OK to get you through at Snett/Oulton/Anglesey etc that allow 105dB. If you want to use the quieter circuits, put the 100 cell race cats back in - they will not affect performance and will also make you road-legal smile
Also you will need to replace the 6 mild steel bolts, which will be welded in situ, with some nice stainless steel ones.

Hi Rob
I have the cats fitted and last time out at Donny I was reading 98/99 on the pit straight drive by so I was amazed when they got this reading yesterday.
I had to cut the old bolts off to remove the system last month so have used S/S ones as suggested.
Having trouble understanding the huge increase tbh !

I can get under 105db with the Roush exhaust on my M400 - I have a noise passed sticker on the windscreen that I leave there permanently wink.

Where were you recorded at 107dB? Atmospherics can influence drive-by figures, but static readings should be fairly reproducible if done correctly. The dB scale is logarithmic so a shift from 98/99dB to 107dB is flippin' enormous. I have to say that I've found that the Roush system does get noisier with time - probably because it spits out some of the wadding, but it has been very gradual. Yours sounds very acute, which leads me to suspect a fault with the meter or the way it was used.

It was a static noise test at Snett yesterday,I had noticed the exhaust note was a bit louder and deeper maybe since I got the car back together but not 9 db worth which would mean something like 3 times louder !

I have the Roush exhaust with no cats and quieter tail pipes.

Static tests have varied from 100db to 105db at various circuits.

Steve, this may seem unrelated, but can you remember how much fuel was in the tank when you had it tested. The reason for this is that yesterday, as Supergrass got low on fuel round Bedford his exhaust note rose dramatically, (I personally thought it sounded lurvly) causing him a black flag for noise as it tripped the noise limiters which were set at 105, yet he passed static at 98db with a 101db limit for the day.

the reason i asked was years ago i had an Xr2 that was quite heavily modified

the fitment of a race cam changed the exhaust note and volume quite considerably, it was never quiet in the first place but after the cam was fitted it was not pleasant to drive on a long journey

it certainly liked to rev after the new cam but idle quality (low air speed) was poor

how does the noble idle - any different ?

the idle and drivability down low dont seem any different, I can still hold 6th gear at 50 mph happily !

Tailpipes alone can make a massive difference to noise level, I posted on this on other threads, i changed the tail pipes for quad powerflow, heavy solid things, and the noise was halfed, the thin material on the standard roush exjhaust system amplify's the noise, i also have catless exhaust.
