Can anyone tell me how the rear hub is assembled. Since the locking nut came loose, there is an horrendous grinding noise when it moves in a forward direction - unable to verify what is causing this, but with it retorqued to 270nm its very loud. Does the rear hub split, so that you can replace wheel bearings?

If so:

anyone know what the bearing no's are or what the rear hubs are off. any help would be appreciated as I'm getting piss wet through as its in bits on the drive as I type.

Ta, Marc.

PS unrelated but do you have to change the bell housings for the fronts if you go to grooved disks?

The rear wheel bearing is a press fit.
I had to replace mine for exactly the same reason.
I got a Quinton Hazell (QWB831 I think!!) part and I believe it's from a BMW 3 series of some description.
I also ended up having to replace the drive flange as mine had worn.

A press fit would indicate a parallel bearing, which is odd as they are predominantly tapered bearings. I have found a link to QWB831

M3 3.0,3.2 1991- QWB831. The majority of BMW rears are this no too.

Yeah, it was definitely a big fat chunky parallel bearing.

It looks like a parallel bearing but it's not. It's a tapered ball race.

Bought mine from here www.gsfcarparts.com Part No B51115 £11.50 each

be careful when you remove it

if the hub has been loose for a while it can wear the hub and then you will struggle to get a bearing to fit tightly

the hub will have to be replaced or resleeved

I had mine replaced by a friend who worked at the local bus garage as he had access to a press. smile

Any idea what they are off of, or who can do the resleeving Mike? As its worn enough to allow me to put the bearing in with my fingers!

Can you clarify as to what the drive flange is?, I'm assuming you are referring to the centre part of the hub that the bearing locates in. If so, can you shed any light as to where you got one from, supplier, what vehicle they are off, I'm drawing a blank with this part.

The upright (big aluminium bit) is a Noble bespoke part.
The bearing (standard) is a BMW part and the number is on Noble parts etc.
The Hub (the bit the wheel bolts on to)is a modified Ford part and Noble supply only.

The hubs from Noble are not always the best, do a search on here and find the thread with the better ways to replace these parts.

Cheers Steve, I'm fortunate in the respect that the main part and the ally parts are intact. Waiting for the stealers to come back with a price for the centre part. eek

The centre part (the bearing) is available at a fraction of the cost from GSW.

you will need to get the hub machined to take a sleeve by an engineering company

if you can't find one - drop me a line DynoMike@hotmail.co.uk
