engine coming out

my engine is coming out. im replacing clutch and gearbox being refurbed. what else should i be doing while its out.

Holy crap don,t ask that question !!! the list is sooooo long !!!

after much debate i,m going with :

gearbox rebuild and LSD
gearbox oil cooler
engine oil cooler
heat lag fuel tank
replace all water pipes in bay
new oil supply pipes to turbo's
remove heads skim fit new valve springs as well as lap in valves
heatproof front bulkhead
heatproof wrap all engine bay wireing
replace all relays and tidy wireing
service altenator
replace water pump and thermostat
new TDS
new engine mounts
new cats in exhaust
new turbo actuators


the problem is while the engine is out alot of these jobs are much easyer !!!!

ok let me rephrase. what do i have to do.

it does depend on what you have time and exspense to do !!! but while the engine is out i think it makes sense to do as much as possible !!

ok cool. i want to do as little as possible lol. its my first engine out job but gotta learn someday so decided this winter was the time to learn with the advice and time of my stepdad who has had engines out on various cars in the past. tux that is a bloody long list yuo are going to be busy. if i get stuck on anything i may be calling on your advise if thats ok. you dont happen to no what all the exhuast gaskets are from. i mean all of them too as none of them are great at the moment.

Gaskets :

manifold gaskets are ford
turbo gaskets are nissen
rest of gaskets are ford transit P100 . call me for part no .

I'm in Hampshire. Where are you. I'm starting mine in 2 weeks. Shocks comin off 1st as need refurbing.

do the ex manifolds

make sure you have a lsd fitted in the box

fit stronger valve springs

if you want some more power - fit stronger actuators

then put it back together and get a remap

The std exhaust manifolds have a habit of cracking so while in bits you should check them ......if they are in good order get them ceramic coated and refit !!! if they are cracked to st mifght have to get them replaced .....but its a bloody expensive upgrade !!!

My rear one is cracked. I was going to go mad with a welder and see if I can sort it. Where. Can u get them ceramic coated. Can this done if they been welded.

My Manifolds were both in good order when i stripped them out in febuary so i sent both manifolds,down pipes and all the other pipes along with all the heat shields to pete at camcoat http://www.camcoat.com/

ceramic coating is supposed to improve heat management and gas flow .

tux they look awsome. im just wondering if it would be cheaper to buy the original manifolds and have them coated. how much was it to coat it all. and does it really stop them cracking.

to tell the truth ...i have no idea !!! the std manifolds do seem to have strength and design issues !!! better to upgrade the manifolds i think . coating was about £300 if i remember correctly . mine were in very good order and i did some work to help support the manifolds so perhaps that helped !! guess the next 5000 miles will tell .

stupid question here, but has anyone looked into getting a batch of manifolds done in cast iron???? just thinking the design looks VERY striaght forward and cast manifolds would be a hell of a lot stronger and offer better heat management than tubular steel items.

It looks like a very easy pattern to make. And as there anrn't any real tight turns i guess you could use VERY thick walled Stainless steel. Coated its going to last ages! Still think there could be a market for cast manifolds though. It would solve all the craking problems for ever...

It won't alter the material strength, well probably not beneficially anyway.
Definitely worth doing though, should help the Turbo's spool a little quicker and make the exhasut sytem less restrictive.
