Nearly got shafted
Discussion
Had my car serviced recently by a 'reputable noble servicing specialist.' Was told my rear exhaust manifold was cracked and needed replacing. Around £900 quid for the job. Anyway have taken it to a local mechanic whom i've known for years for a second opinion. He's had it on ramps and told me the manifold is fine. His dad who owns the garage has also confirmed this. Needless to say am not happy one little bit.

Cracked manifold should be a matter of fact rather than opinion although they are a know weak spot on the Noble.
Have you asked the specialist to explain or justify their recommendation or where the manifold was apparently cracked (surely it would affect performance or is just an advisory) - would be interested to know which specialist it was as mine will need servicing in the new year and the choices are somewhat limited!

I'd be interested to see some pictures. If you need to get more of your chest you can always use NobleParts....
+1. Name names... that's what Nobleparts is for amongst other things. If they've tried to mug you, I for one would like to know who they are.The cracks can sometimes close up when the car is hot.
How many miles has the car done?
Did they tell you which manifold was cracked? Best off checking for a Pfft,Pfft sound when you 1st start the car, you can also feel them blowing.
Changing the manifolds can be a pig of a job sometimes, not usually the type of job you would fabricate to make some easy bucks, unless they had some in stock they needed to get rid of?
It is quite a common fault, but if it is the case they said they are cracked when they are not, then maybe you should go back and ask them to point out the exact problem, give them a chance for exoneration, they can be sometimes difficult to locate if on the underside of the front manifold
and also depends on the severity, a Noble specialist will have a trained ear for this type of thing.

Well my mechanic thinks the problem in the first place is a misfire on one of the plugs. And he seems to think they weren't even changed in the first place. Sigh.
Well come on and tell us the facts and location etc. The car is a low miler under 20k. Its was driven to my mates garage 1 mile away and was on ramps and inspected 2 hours later. Engine was not even hot. A written advisory note printed out stated the rear ex manifold requires replacing. When i got the car serviced i was told this but told them i didnt want to do the manifold till later on. Funnily enough the garage did say they had one manifold left and would hang onto it for me. Anyway am having spark plugs replaced this week so will see soon enough if thats the problem. If so then it shows that these plugs should have been changed or checked during the service and this split manifold was simply a way to get big bucks off me for nothing.

When they said they had "one left" is it the old style manifold or the new type? What was the original problem?Edited by Son of Quatto on Tuesday 8th December 22:28

Can I ask what the point of this thread was? You think you got shafted but not really sure and you can tell us which dealer and haven't provided any detail on Nobleparts?
What do you want
bit harsh, i suspect he was just venting after nearly spending nearly 1k for no reason...What do you want

Incidentally one of my manifolds is severly cracked and you can see it easily when its cold... car runs fine for last 5k miles with only a little hesitation under 2k revs.
I have a pair of M400 ones to go on soon as I get a chance

So they were going to charge you £900 for just changing the rear manifold?
I'm assuming that wasn't S/S either.Seen as though they had "one" on the shelf and considering if the price was just for "one", it is sounding ominous indeed, let us know the outcome.
I'm going to p
s off SJC here
but the manifolds do tend to go around 20k, a crack appeared in mine at 17k and 23k on the last car, so it may not be long before this is a job that requires doing anyway, but when the time comes just get your local mechanic to do it, and see if you can source some M400 Manifolds off ebay.Gassing Station | Noble | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

A very good point. One garage starts the car from cold, other garage puts car on ramps immediately the car arrives and you've got two different outcomes.
