do they all try to race you? it seems like they see it as a challenge? i entertained 1 the other day. but what sort of power do they need to be putting out to be on par in a straight line? id hazzard a guess at 450bhp to make up for the weight difference.

450 in an evo will have similar straight line performance but get into the twisty stuff and all but the most willing and trusting of Noble drivers will be left behind.

Yep, I'd be inclined to agree with that.

Is that because the Evo drivers just have no fear or because they are 4 wheel drive?

I think it's fair to say it is easier to drive an Evo/Scooby quick due to the 4x4 and electronics.

and has more grip pretty much in most circumstances, better suspension for all but flat roads and better balanced brakes !!
I have both (Evo 6 TME) so feel that I can comment without being too biased !

Theye're aren't many Nobles with WRC pedigree handling wink give the ricers some twisties & they'll be long gone with a handy peddel'er.

I hate evo's myself as they are sooo competent but broingly dull at the same time.

must admit my old tme with approx 500 horses was far quicker than my old 2.5 in all departments.but if it was standard 2.5 against standard evo tommi mak then i would say the 2.5 has the edge.think it would take a 550plus bhp evo to match a standard m400 and so on

Yeah, but i bet you would be quicker round a track now Steve than the EVO. Everything lost in the bends would be taken back in the straights smile

no 450BHp scooby is going to do 0-100 in under 9 seconds

I used to eat tuned Scoobys in my Cayman S (all be it my Cayman was tuned a bit but only to 340Bhp so 100Bhp down on a tuned scooby)

But even big HP jap rally cars never seem to match the stats and very few and handle sub 10 seconds 100mph times
given that the jap cars are also very very quick off the line ie to 30Mph, it makes them even slower 60 to 100MPh which is the sort of speed you might be temped to race one on a bypass etc.

A 400HP (never mind a 450HP one) Scooby will see off 0-60 in circa 4 seconds, and will easily see sub 9 seconds to 100. If it's a classic (old shape) it will also be maybe 100Kg lighter than a Caymen S.
Perhaps those "tuned" Sooby's only had tuned dump valves? wink

In all fairness there aren't a lot of 450BHP+ scoobys, most are sub 400 as well. My son's type R did an 11.3 with a terminal of 113 and his car is only about 380BHP. I'd also warned him that if he blew the gearbox up launching it, he was paying for the repairs himself! (His 60 foot time was not quick). smile

always the same, Genuine 450bhp+ evos, scooby and even cossies are actually quite rare... you hear of all these really powerful cars but often its either bull or just a peak power figure that doesnt translate to the kind of performance it should on the road.
I had a cossie with a real 360bhp, I remember racing other cossies with claimed well over 400bhp and destroying them down the strip even when they had decent starts.

Must say tho that 11.3 sounds a little optopistic to me... as thats as fast as an enzo or Mclaren F1.... I had a 500bhp Ultima that did that kind of time and there is absolutelly no way a 400bhp evo could touch that to 100mph... Ive driven a 300bhp STi scooby and it was on par with my M3 on acceleration and my cossie would have left it for absolute dead... the Ultima was in a differnt league again... I also remember at the Autocar 0-100-0 event the evo couldnt beat my Ultimas 60ft time which was only matched by the std M400 that was also there.

Incidentally Ive kept with a very spireted driven FQ300 that was trying to loose me round the twisties in my E36 M3 and both were matched for acceleration... it was dry tho lol.

Driving these cars in the wet though is an absolute revalation.

That was at Santa Pod, relatively recently, he has the time slip.

Mac F1, look on dragtimes.com, you will see them with those times (11.1 & 11.4)..... look at the terminal speeds though, a much more accurate indication of actual Power, they are in the 140MPH area!

Well I trust he has a timing slip... but were does the car make its ground up on a 500bhp car (or 600bhp in the F1 case) if its not got a better 60ft time and then massivelly less power...

My cossie had a genuine 360bhp and similar torque and whilst was only 2wd it could be launched very very hard with minimal wheelspin at the pod... it also reached a 109mph terminal... so pretty comparable to you sons car... yet my cossie did low 13's at the pod and that allowed me to come 3rd at Ultima street car way back when.... Im sure it could have got into the high 12's on a perfect run... but 1.5 seconds faster?
Just cant see how a car of similar weight and power can be so much faster.... unless of cause it has massivelly more torque than bhp?

Ooops, was working from memory there, his time was 12.2 with a 115 terminal.

"A 400HP Scooby will easily see sub 9 seconds to 100"

I would have to see that, as I do not think it possable at all.

I test drove a Litchfield Type 25 Scooby Mark 2 with the 415BHP Cossie engine.
Having had,and been in a few sub 10 sec-100 cars, without a doubt that would be one of them.IIRC at the time the mags tested it at under 10 secs as well. In fact it was a bloody astonishing car (especially the engine) and it was only resale (unfairly as it turns out) that put me off.

Is your TME standard? If it's standard, I don't agree with this. The Noble is massively quicker in a straight line and has better suspension in my view. The Evo is much easier to drive quicker because of the 4wd. I am pretty sure that a tuned evo, to say 400bhp would be no quicker than a Noble around a track with a good driver at the wheel. Having written that, I have just looked up the top gear times and a GTO3 did it in 1.25 and an FQ400 in 1.24.8. V close.

The Evo is relatively slow from 30 to 100. A standard one takes over 11 secs whereas a GTO3 is sub 8 secs.

The majority of Evo's and Imprezas i've came across on the road werent all that quick, my Exige S was quicker than a Evo 7 fq300 that decided to drive up my chuff down a sliproad and it stayed with a PPP Impreza no problem although not quicker but as quick. The Noble is in another league performance wise to my Exige S so should see off all but the heavily tuned examples 400bhp+.

At the end of the day you can make a lot of cars as quick or quicker than a Noble but whos having the most fun? The Nobles very rare, cracking to drive and attracts lots of good attention and underated by some car badge snobs.. I dont like stereotyping but up in the North East we have millions of Evo's and Imprezas all driven by chavtastic, bodybuilding lunatics who look like a bulldog chewing a wasp and most are very young which after checking the insurance costs im pretty sure they arent insured correctly.

I would like to own one or the other at some point just to say I've had one as they are great cars on twisty bumpy B roads but they do have a certain image attached to them.
