To all you gearbox breakers!
Discussion
Just need a bit of advice from you guys that have broken gearboxes and what your experience was.
I took the car out for a run in the sun yesterday and whilst out during the day I noticed at different times and different gears I could feel and hear what sounded like a fluttering noise from the turbo. The sound was not unlike once before when a hose blew off the BOV, it was a kind of turbo fluttering/chuffing type air blowing sound and whilst it was doing it there was also a distinctive power loss.
Anyway on the way back home just cruising in fifth gear when the flutter came on again and I decided to try and push the car through it with a little more throttle, Suddenly there was a lot of boost whistle and vibration a then I lost drive in fifth.
Now I know that fifth is the week point but it just seems very strange because every other gear is just perfect and I got the car home fine but fifth just has nothing, No noise or vibration at all.
Its just like I have another neutral.
So when I got home a friend of mine was working the gearlever whilst I was having a look over the engine and box. The weird thing is that without the engine running whilst engaging fifth gear you can hear something tapping against the front heat shield.
You can actually see the heat shield moving slightly and feel the movement under it. I traced the gear selector cables to that area but I Cannot find out anymore without getting the car in the air and me underneath. Im hoping that it's maybe just one of the cables come loose from a bracket or something like that.
Looks like the Gearboxman's strengthened unit might be a good excuse for a larger power upgrade than originally planned if not.
So tell me guys, When you blew your boxes was it a clean total quiet gear loss or lots of chattering and clanging.
Cheers Matty.

That sounds more engine/Turbo related to me Matty?
Can't see how an engine problem would make just one gear not work myselfMike Tuckwood said:
Usually lots of good old fashioned mechanical clunking/grinding/knocking with gearbox failures?
There is, but a few have gone this way I seem to remember. There must be enough room in the bottom of the box for all the bits.I'm trying to think of a way a slightly broken linkage could do this but can't. Box out and have a look sadly

Mine was different to you.
Basically normal driving, was in 5th gear, applied throttle a bit at a slight incline, strange rattling noise, changed to 4th, noise went, slowed down and went through the gears with the rattling only present in 5th gear. I decided to make my way home but the rattling got very loud, sounding more like metal on metal, after a mile or so and was then present in all gears and even in neutral unless I had the clutch pedal depressed but I didn't loose power. RAC called out and told me it was the bearing although Gearbox man said that was OK for covering 35k miles (albeit a plastic casing and of 'poor quality') and this is what was left of 5th gear.

I'm guessing if you've lost more teeth than I did on the 5th gear then it would in effect be a neutral?

Conversely, I'm trying to think of a way that 5th gear could make the Turbo make a fluttering sound, but with that being the only reported noise?I have a GTO 3 in here currently with a suspected failed diff, now THAT makes a clunking noise (and no fluttering Turbo noises)?
Difficult to say without actually seeing the car, internet diagnosis is far from straight forward and isn't much more than a "best guess" usually?
Mike.

Sounds like the two problems are two problems and not related. If the linkage / bracket has come adrift somewhere then maybe its possible than when selecting 5th at the gearshift is not engaging 5th at the box ?
You need to get it in the air and have a look Matty
Na better still.....pull it all out and do the whole shooting match....you know it makes sense

Just got off the phone with Bernie (Gearboxman) very knowledgable and helpfull chap.
Apparentley there can be two different types of failure.
1. The failure of the gear itself like Elenitro's is obviously the messy version with plenty of noise and bits flying around inside and usually caused by bearing failure which no longer allows the gears to mesh correctly and causes the damage.
2. The non noisy failure which results to be another neutral in fifth gear is caused by the gear itself breaking the weld from the shaft and spinning on the shaft. The torque going through the box causes this and the likley cause of my failure being the turbo flutter/splutter which caused the Load/Unload shocks through the gear.
Oh Well looks like some cold nights out on the driveway.
On the plus side I was looking at keeping my upgrades to a sensible level to save the box.
Now I think WTF! Bigger turbo's and all the other bits and Trevor won't have to hold back.
