Yes, they all do that.

Take the petrol cap off and adjust the nut on the end so that it makes a tighter seal when closed. Only don't turn the nut the wrong way - otherwise when you put the cap back in the hole and close the level thing it might not come out again.

Have you recently filled it up ? If you overfill it, there is a little tube that runs from the top of the filler and appears out the bottom of the sill. The idea is that the petrol will escape down the tube, but what can happen is the tube perishes a bit instead of the petrol ending up on the ground under the sill it ends up running into the sill.

had this on the old 2.5.it was the non return valve that runs from the top of the tank to the pipe peeping out of the floor on the passenger side front of rear wheel.i took the valve off the crude mounting plate and moved it further up.this seemed to have cured it.also performed this on a mates noble and has been fine since

I have another reason. I had this and it was a leak in the tank, the fuel got on the under tray and ate its way through the floor sealant and got into the carpets. It was a very strong smell though.
